Is the base model diesel - about $1000 overpriced according to Redbook.
If she got it and was not interested in Awd I would pull out the rear propshaft and viscous coupling to improve reliability. It will not hurt 2wd performance on the road.

My daughter is looking for an other car to buy, some thing that is reliable and reasonably cheap to run It has to be able tow a box trailer with her family camping gear two or three time a year up to about 100ks per trip.
She has found this Freelander thats she is keen on and i must admit that I know nothing about these vehicles, so i am hoping that some one may be able to give me an opinion on the vehicle in the attachment, the weakness, common faults, and reliability etc.

Don't buy a freelander, better to get an S1 disco TDI 300.
Deisel FL gets around the problem of K motors but as Gary said, the IRD is a problem and there's alot of FL's getting around in 2WD.
Uneven rear tyre wear is a good sign the IRD is on the way out.
......... post 2001 model K series 2.5 V6 have the modifications/updates to previous model problems.
Im getting a bit miffed by ppl saying DON'T buy a Freelander, as long as you keep up services and treat them well they are as reliable as ANY Landrover can be.
IRD's do fail and the quick fix is to disconnect the shaft, it's not cheap to fix the problem (never is for a Landrover) that is why there are a few running round in 2wd.
HGF is common, however the Freelander 1.8 k series in particular is infamous for it.
EVERY Landrover has weaknesses, you just need to figure out the ones you can live with!
I'm with Streetlander, I own a 2001 V6 Freelander and it is going well. However, they are heavy on petrol. I would actually stick with a diesel model and if you can, buy a 2001 model or later!!! ( if the budget can stand it that is)![]()
Buy a suzuki I say.
The Freelanders can be good if perfectly serviced but if for a young girl was looking for a reliable car, especially at that vintage, alarm bells go off.
I would also recommend a early 300tdi or altogether different make.
The new Freelander is totally different and Yes to that anyday but out of the 3 friends who had one of the older ones, they all have horror stories to tell.
Thats my experience with them and they all bought their cars new and still lots of issues. So be warned.![]()
A Suzuki Grand Vitara four door makes a lot of economic and reliabilty sense in this instance.
I owned my current Freelander and D1 for about 2 years together - The Freelander is a much nicer car to drive and much easier to live with. For a town style car I would never pick a disco over a Freelander - sold the D1 still got the Freelander.

About 9l/100 around town and 6.4l/100 on a leisurely highway run.
If you do get it and keep the vcu in make sure testing it is included in your maintenance program - look in the Freelander section - there is plenty of good information there.
