In about 1973, my brother was working in Copenhagen, and, as a birthday present, he sent me a kit of the Lauritsen Line's sail training ship "Lilla Dan" to build. The kit consisted of a set of plans and a stack of planks. I spent about six months building it.

Correction: No, a "Glossy Black" or "calyptorhynchus lathami" is not the same as a "Major Mitchell" "cacatua leadbeateri". For a start, the former is black with red patches under the tail and Wings, whereas the pink and white Major Mitchell is very similar in colour to a galah, but with a bigger crest and somewhat brighter colours. Both are relatively rare. No Major Mitchells live round here that I have spotted, but there are several pairs of Glossy Blacks, one often seen in the house yard, and more are commonly seen on the way in through the forest.

Well I said I would stand correction, and stand it I will. Just goes to show you can't believe everything your mates tell you in your twenties.

Yes the kits do look rather daunting but I have made the Schooner for Port Jackson, see $20 note. The Thermopylae, a tea clipper that rivalled Cutty Sark and Bluenose 2 another schooner that sails out of Nova Scotia and has a mainsail of 5000 square feet.

The Bluenose was given to a friend of mine but she took one look at it and never touched it again, she eventually gave it to me to build and keep so I built it and gave it back to her.
