    Qld roadworthy

    Hi all

Just a bit of advice about road worthies in Qld

I got my 85 RRC tested yesterday and it failed because of a few things

The drivers seat does not move back and forward smoothly , it does moves easy enough and locks into postiton but does not glide, so told fail

The rear diff filler on the rear axle has signs of dam from oil around the filler so fail ( as all land rovers do )

The lh side rear radius arm from bushes has a rust satin on it. When asked if the bush was nacked he said don't know I did not test it when I saw the rust stain on it , fail due to the rust stain on rubber

Engine oil leak , I ask him at what level as the car has been parked on my concrete drive and have had no sings of oil under the car. He said there was signs of damp around the bottom of the engine , therefore fail .

He then said that the car fail as the idle was too high. As I had left the car there at 6.30am and he tested it at 2 pm I ask if the car was warm and he said no . So I said then the choke was on then , so of course it would run high at idle. He said still a fail.

Am I being a winging pom or is he being too tough on the test for a truck that is 26 years old

    G'day Reads90

Nope, you have just met a RWC tester that hates Landrovers or any version of them, just find an honest tester in your area, or go to a Landrover specialist, just MHO as there is/was one in Caboolture like that,HATED Landrovers, but would pass some very sus Tojos.

BTW. The seat runners on my 85 RRC feel notchy too, but it slides easily, I think it is the slide lock passing the notches.

    cheers

The tester sounds like a ***** but I'd be happy to have a list like that to fix. At least a bit of a degrease/grease and a bit of lube to the seat slider should have it sorted.

A Safety Certificate should just be a basic safety test. Yours sounds more like a "pre purchase inspection".

Well I am not going back to him. Going to take it else where

There were some other things he was not happy with

He did not believe the engine number on the side of the engine, even though it matched paper work and questioned where was the NSW reg stuff was . Even though the car has Qld plates and rego sticker on it. Which he did not notice

So he was a bit of an arse

Firstly the age or type of vehicle should make no difference to the examination carried out.
As far as supposed oil leaks is concerned,in any state of Australia,an oil leak constitutes a visible drop of oil,not just a damp patch around an area.
All accessories must work, and the seats must slide, but there is NO rule to say they must be smooth,as long as moves without undue force.
With regards to the bushing, tell him that he can't fail the bush just by looking at it.And that along with all the other things, you are going to lodge a complaint to the Dept. motor transport because he is obviously not doing the inspection correctly, and is obviously just out after money.
Then take the vehicle elsewhere and have it inspected properly

    Complete and utter "Banker "

When i had the old 300tdi, i had to get a rego as it came up from VIC, I took it in, and it failed on a front oil leak, normal place, the man said go away, clean it up with a old wragg, come straight back, and drive it straight onto the ramp, so i did, he then was not happy with the oil that was under the rad plate, been there for years, told me to clean it up and then it should be ok, it then passed.

He just said he you cant have oil dripping out, he would lose his license if he got caught passing then like this. What he sees at inspection, and what happens later, he does not really care..

Point is you have a list from one guy, take it elsewhere and not only do you have to pay another $65 or so, but they may come up with a different list. If you fix the issues on his list he can't fail the car (not legally at any rate and you could complain to Qld Transport) and you have 14 days to fix the issues. I was told that as long as there was no oil actually dripping at the time it wasn't able to be failed, so take a rag, wipe it as you leave and it should be fine (that came straight from an examiner).

I just got mine done at Kmart tyre and auto, he had a few issues to pick on but chose to pass the car and just suggest they be fixed, such as the rust in the door tops and a spotlight protruding past the front of the bullbar, technically could have failed these but just told me to address them as soon as I could.

    Depends on where you go.

It is worth noting that in the same way you can complain to Qld transport if rwc inspectors pass things that shouldn't pass, you can also take them to task if they pick on something that is not a reasonable safety issue.

In Vic in 1967 I had to take my Austin for a roadworthy for rego. It failed as they said the bottom bronze bush in the steering box was worn. It was new, but the outside of the steering box was dirty. I cleaned and polished the aluminium casting and went back and they passed it. So looks like as they say, "the more things change, the more they stay the same". In 1977 I had a bloke in Ipswich Qld who wanted to charge me for the 2nd test on a Morris Nomad (ex vic rego). When I asked for his name and license number, he said why. I said "in the govt machinery rules in this book I have in my hand, the 2nd test is free". He let me off for free but I still shopped him.
