If I was selling up and buying non LR, I'd get an Amorok or a 4.2TD Cruiser AND if I was going for a Jeep, it would be the latest Grand Cherokee.

Hey Barry, he says he is going to buy a XJ Cherokee, they are about 1/10th of the price of the vehicles your mentioning.
Sounds more like a move sideways then forward.

I've got a Jeep and a Land Rover. They are both widely regarded as the most unreliable brands on the market. Swapping between them for reliability reasons seems very odd indeed. Having said that, both of mine have been fine. As soon as D3's drop another 10k my Jeep is gone.:)
When the XJ Jeeps came out I bought one- fantastic car - not a problem with it. Just service and drive it so when it had travelled 120 thousand kays I traded it on another one. Big mistake - huge. This one was nothing but trouble from day one.
Today the XJ is getting old - they ran from [I think] 1994 to 2001 and most these days seem to have travelled around the 150/200 thousand kay mark. Jeep did indeed gather a poor reliability problem back then and most of the things which go wrong with them are now well known and also it is now also well known what to look for when they play up and how to fix them. This knowledge was somewhat thin on the ground when they were being sold as new cars. Then there were the exorbitant prices Jeep charged for replacement parts. My extended warranty folk nearly choked on the $2200 plus labour for an exhaust manifold - but they paid.
Also older cars bring their own problems as things just plain wear out rather than being a 'design/manufacturing/quality' fault.
I can understand where jazza is coming from and in some ways I am a bit jealous. I look at the ads for used XJs with some degree of nostalgia and 'I want one' emotions. If you haven't driven an XJ then you don't know what you are missing, especially in constant four wheel drive and on fast gravel roads. Fantastic power to weight ratio, very quick off the mark, great handling and capable both on the road and off it but fast gravel roads are its forte.
If you are going to get one jazza then perhaps don't consider the 1996 XJ - it seemed to be made from the spare parts bins and parts today can be difficult to track down for it and some parts are not readily interchangeable between it and other different year XJs.
Oh heck - I've got to go. I wonder what XJs are on CarSales today??????

hahahahah those posts are just as about useful as the one your complaining about, I think I'm more over seeing these posts than actually seeing threads about people giving up there landrovers or leaving the forum because of a dummy spit:p
Jez if you feel the need to sell your car then do it, good luck with what ever you decide to buy and hopefully you come back to the fold one day, as I reckon as soon as you sell it you will miss it and end up with another that is not as well sorted as the one you have and start all over again :lol2:

Join the Jeep Forum and read the problems with Jeeps as many and as costly as Land Rover products, simply complex machines are costly to maintain and keep on the road regardless of who makes them when they go wrong.
Personally l like the new Grand Jeep Cherokee and have been thinking of getting the new turbo diesel 3 litre version, again it has the same complex electronic computer wizardary as the Discovery 3 and 4 models and probably as costly to repair if things went wrong with it except from capital cost it is cheaper to buy and was thinking of doing a novated lease for ownership option.
But now l am thinking with all the track closures likely to take place over the coming years to just get a straight passenger car cheaper to buy and 98% of my travel is on the black anyway and we seem to spend less time each year going off road and even less time camping
But l wouldn't be making a decision to swap one old 4wd with for another based on reliability and cost it doesn't exist in the real world
I'm with Stevo68 on this you have an old car it is going to have many more issues than a new one.
I have a 93/4 disco which I am pretty much always tinkering with to keep going. If you want anything with turn key reliability buy something new.
The trade off for me is that I really cant depreciate it any further than it already is so if I dent, sctach, or maim her it doesn't matter - except to my ego.
I would get the wrangler rubicon it's an awesome piece of kit.
I'm very happy with my 22 year old 110 but I'm not against people buying other 4WD. I understand if you are frustrated with the expenses of keeping an older vehicle on the road. I'd be interested to hear how you found it compared to the disco and a pic.
It's not a Land Rover problem. It's an age and k's problem.
Just get something with less k's. LR, Jeep, Nissan, whatever. Less K's usually means less wear and tear.
