The bulk of the current Land Rover Defender range is likely to continue in production until 2017 or later — and that will be at least two years after the launch of the all-new Defender replacement in 2015.

The long-wheelbase 110 and commercial 130 versions of the Land Rover Defender are likely to be beneficiaries, staying in production well after the arrival of the new short-wheelbase Defender, previewed at the Frankfurt show as the DC100 concept.

“There are a number of changes to the legislation that mean we can keep the current Defender in production longer than we thought,” said a Land Rover source.

The first is the ability of the new 2.2-litre diesel engine to meet EU6 standards — the tough next step in emissions regulations that will align diesel engine pollutants with those of petrols in 2015/16.

There is also a suggestion that the Defender might not have to comply with EU6 until a later date. A few years ago the Defender was reclassified as a commercial vehicle, which might help.

Pedestrian impact laws were due to pull down the shutters on the Defender in 2015, but Land Rover now understands that a ‘derogation’ — exemption from the law — might apply until 2020.

Which somewhat confirms what the workshop manager from the local LR stealership told me a few days ago. While on a course in Pretoria, the LRUK rep told them how shocked HQ was at the negative feedback from the Defender/LR community. They indicated that the current form would continue on, possibly built in SA or India.

So they're surprised at the negative feedback? Interesting...

Hot off the press today, from the bald man himself.

4WD Newz: DC100 bit of a damp squib with enthusiasts

The core message about the new design: "get used to it". And yes, they are targetting "emerging markets".

    dc defender concept?

sorry if this has been talked about before, i dont get much free time to research.

but ive seen the new defender concept for 2015.......
wow, LR just dont get it do they, what is this abortion on wheels?
im in the running for a new 4by and a defender is no.1 currently, but if this is the direction LR are going with the defender i will spend 55k else where.

somebody please tell me this is a bad dream and they arent really going to produce this....
i cant see the british army ordering these to defend the country, aus army is already phasing out the LR and going to the gwagon, so the only ppl who will want this, is hollywood mums and playboys, LR will not have one tuff ruggered, simple, capable model available.
that leaves me to look at getting a wrangler..... perish the thought.

please please tell me its all a joke.
    cheers
    joel.

Those DC100 concepts are not exactly a popular idea...

If you get one now it won't look like that..........

Not sure if you have seen some of the jeep concept vehicles but if you are going to not buy a car now because of what it may look like in 3 years time your options will be fairly limited.

There will still be a lot of this model and older model defenders on the road in 2015.

yeah i understand that, but the parts will eventually dry up, the defender will loose its good name reputation etc
i have seen all the wrangler concepts, and they all ressemble a wrangler, not a ifs,irs playboy car, i just cant believe its even in the pipeline.
like landcruiser utes, wranglers have remained predominantly the same.
you know the old "if it aint broke"

i understand how it seems vain, but if i fork out 55k for a defender now, i want the next model to look similar, not completely different and turn into a soccer mum rap mobile rolling on 24'' s with crack cocaine being sold out of the back of it in the "hood".

inwatched the video on youtube when it was unvailed in frankfurt, and the guy goes on about how it will have models from the "malibu showpony"or something similar.... to the "farmer"wanting a completely "stripped"out model.
i grew up on a farm and still have ties to a family farm, no farmer is going to buy an ifs, irs plastic showpony imitation defender.

rant over, i hope they dont build it, could be another death rattle for LR.

Skinny Joel, I really don't think LandRover cares to be honest. What you want gives them 20 or so sales per month in Aus. What they want and need is a volume seller, even if that changes the target market from the typical Defender enthusiast to those soccer mums and dads.
    Cheers
