Thread: Which type of Jack?

Biggest problem with all this gear is weight!

Often the extra weight is what causes us to get stuck or break down in the first place

Whilst spares and heaps of recovery gear make us feel all warm and fuzzy it's often by the nature of carrying these same items that we find the need/requirement to use them

*looks like your Jeep driving mate got himself stuck good and proper!

A Disco 1 bottle jack is the way to go. They come up regularly on ebay.

I too, have carried a hi lift around and never used it. With a spare wheel carrier on the Defender, you cant use one at the back and unless you have side bars or rock sliders you cant use a high lift there either.

Just a thought, I'm sure everyone knows, but just in case, the high lift jack is for recovery purposes only, not to be used for tyre changing, anyone who has used one will know how unstable they can be. Bob

PS. the hilift jack is only normally carried if you are going off road, and where you may find yourself in a situation where you may need a means of recovery , each vehicle is supplied with a bottle jack, or similar, from new. So, common sense would say don't carry the hi-lift on a highway cruise, make a judgement if you are going to a remote area, Cheers, big ears, Bob

What about the alternative of an exhaust jack for those occasions when a little ballast under the wheels is needed or to just allow enough clearance for D 1 jack.No one underneath of course!

Id thought of one of those as well Mary, but then discounted it because I couldnt get under the car / change wheels etc etc so would still need a jack.
