    Any Powder Monkeys here???

    Hi People.
My boy is considering a gap year before he studies to be a Chemical Enginner at Uni.
He loves blowing stuff up and is extremely good at it.
We need a Powder Monkey at work to blow some rocks up in lots of places all over the Shire.
How long is the course and can a 17 year old do it???

pretty sure you've got to be 18+ and have a security screen/clearance completed (amongst other things) - well thats for mining, unsure of civil. If hes turning 18 shortly BHPB are about to start offering cadetships that will see him exposed to all aspects of mining - rotating between different departments..............unsure what the $$$ will be but have to bear in mind its aimed primarily at younguns.

Andy you have to be 18 or older to sit your restricted shotfirers lic.

Its not that hard to complete to get a restricted W.A shotfirers lic you really need to offside a competent shotfirer before you think of playing with explosives.

    Andy,
Have to be 18, but is not a hard course.
BHP Open pits generally use Dyno Nobel and dont employee powder monkeys directly, underground and mixed operations do direct employee and train.
Good luck if he decides to do this for a bit.

    Sounds like fun.

To get an explosives licence you have to undergo an ASIO check (as part of the security clearance process) for which you have to be 18 years old - or so I gather.
It's not broken. It's "Carbon Neutral".

    Or join al Quaeda.

Once upon a time, any decent hardware store, particularly in rural areas had a box or so of explosives, fuse and detonators in stock. If you were a primary producer or possessed a Miner's Right, then you could buy explosives, no licences, no training. You got a Miner's Right at the police station for the asking and a modest fee.

Yep you need a Dangerous Goods security clearance card. I have to have one to access Dynos facilities.
