So how it got into my sump is a mystery, but I can guess its due to human error at some stage in the past when the engine had the top end apart, cause there is no way it could work its way there any other way.

Lets just hope nothing else is hiding away inside that shouldn't be
To my knowledge the last time the engine was apart was when I had a mechanic change the cam years ago.. I since done a number of oil changes, sold the vehicle, bought it back some three years later and done the oil change last weekend discovering the component!!!

Surely the oil drains from the head to the sump are big enough for the weeny spacer thingy to fall through.

It'll fall down the back of the valley, the largest opening for oil drainage.

cept the vallys sealed by the vally gasket......

I can see how it might have happened if the valley and gasket had been removed for some reason (inspecting the cam or trying to fix a manifold leak) and then whoever was doing the work had found they couldnt put the new cover back on without removing the rocker covers.

it could have fallen into the front of the left hand head and been washed down when the engine was refilled.
