Now, I wont go into details, but for certain reasons, I am not interested in purchasing an Acer.

So, I head on back to the office, and decide to ring the other stores. Funny thing is, EVERY store seems to have sold out of this one model in a couple of hours. Yea, right....

So, basically, if you like Acer, and are after a new laptop, you might want to check them out. Personally, I am taking my business elsewhere.

Don't know why the negativity about Acer. The one I'm typing this on is over a year old now and has never missed a beat. The Mrs has one almost as old as mine, and never a problem with that one either.

We both have larger laptops, both better known brands, but wanted something smaller for travelling, so both have Acer netbooks. Because of my job, I hardly ever use the larger laptop any more, and this little thing gets used almost every day - and is constantly getting banged about in carry-on luggage.

So far (touch wood), I've had a better run out of this little thing than I've had out of some of the supposedly "reputable" brands. I got it cheap - on special at Office National - bundled with a carry bag (which I never use) and an external DVD read/write drive that we use fairly often. I make a habit of working off external hard drives, which I back up regularly. If the netbook dies, I'll throw it in the bin and buy another next time they're "on special". :D

If your quick, you might just still catch the higher spec toshiba L670 at $899 on catch of the day like I did!! :cool:

I went in with a couple of blokes from work to a local HN and we walked out with 4 laptops between us. The store was chockas and it was hard to get a good look at all the computers but when we were there approx 13.00, there was still plenty of laptops from $500 to $1500. I checked out the cheaper ones but wasn't overly pleased with the specs (i'm upgrading from a netbook so was looking for a jump in performance), so I settled on an Asus for $1050 and got the second one for my daughter for christmas. By the time we were leaving the lower end ones were selling out but they were turning over plenty of stock and no doubt making some profit on extended warranties. I have never seen so many computers being sold in such a short time.

Often with sales like this the great buys are picked up by staff, their family and friends before anyone else gets a look in.
Sad but probably true.
Not HN but, I got for this reply for an item I wanted on sale one morning sorry sir, we only get x amount of units per store and we sold out yesterday. Funny I said you sale only starts today (catalogue in hand) and you have only been open 10 minutes this morning. You should have pr-ordered then was the reply. Well last week you told me I could not preorder or have kept aside an on sale item.
Needless to say I never have shopped there again.

Cut them out and go on-line you will not regret it in the long run. These idiot businesses treat their customers with poor service, deceit and disrespect all the time and then whinge when we move away from them. Australia needs more retail competition... Our gov't should stop letting the big boys gobble up all the medium players through predatory and anti-competitive pricing. But they wont... Too many of them taking too many kick backs or feathering their own nests. Have a look at what BUNNINGS has done to hardware if you reckon HN are a shonk. They have gobbled up just about all of their opposition. It so bad, they no longer have to have cheap items in every category or to worry about their price guarantee as there is simply no where else to go.

We should be asking our political leaders to re-regulate retail as they can't be trusted to do the right thing for the customer when profits are involved.

But that's not gonna happen is it?

I agree Tombie, but there are a lot of issues A good example is I wanted weather proof connectors 3 pin, 4 pin and 6 pin. Here in Newman 3 pin $24-95ea, 4 pin $27-95, 6 pin not available. 4 pin nearly 2700% markup and I doubt buying bulk they would even pay $1 per unit.
Same items in Hong Kong $1 ea plus $3 delivery.
Same with LEDs $20-$30 ea if you can get them, $1-$2 ea out of Hong Kong.
IMHO the markup on these is not reasonable.

You are entitled to your opinion Tombie.

Its just a shame you're not prepared to express it here so we can explore and dissect it. In a previous life I spent nearly 20 years in the Retail Industry, so you might be able to teach me a few more things.

To be honest, I am not sure though... just one look at your "family offensive" avatar tells me I am not likely to see much sense in much of what you say. I'm not a fan of those stickers either, but that twist on it is a bit too close to home for myself with a Mrs and 3 kids.

Based on that picture I think that if I caught you at the wrong time, you might want to harm my family... is there another point to it that I might actually be missing?

P.S. I actually meant individually you will not regret it. Collectively (as a people and a Nation) I reckon we have a mass of issues to work through in regards to the quality and competitiveness in local manufacturing and retail big business. What I see is that big retailers are mostly similar to politicians at the moment... a group of greedy "cream croppers" sitting up top bleeding their industry/country dry in the name of profits. More truely, with only their own intents and purposes at heart and not a fair output for the little guy (their customers/voters).
