Thread: Chain grading and markings

Some 30 years ago I was given a chain which has a grade marking on each link of A (ie a capital A). I understood it to be a good quality and strong chain suitable for recovery work, and I have used it for that purpose for years.
Can anybody tell me what the A marking is?
I have recently been given a Qld Govt publication entitled " A Guide for doggers". It refers mainly to lifting chain and marked T or 80, or 800 for high strength alloy steel. The publication also refers to Transport chain specifically designed for lashing or load securing, graded 60,70 or 75.
I suspect my chain may be an old version of transport chain.
What I thought was simple is complicated.

I suspect you may be right. The present system of hallmarking chain in this country is a numerical one, either a 6 or a 60 or 600 (as an example) which all means the same thing in the end.

New Zealand uses a alpha code but "T" is not part of their coding. I rather suspect that you have in your possession a Transport tie down chain (from some time ago) which can also be used for haulout, towing etc but not overhead lifting. It will be a low carbon (we still allowed to use that word) steel construction.
