Thread: smoke in the ranges

In my authorised area I have 3 fire permits current...I can tell you there are more than 3 fires happening...The fire brigade is working it's arse off right now with illegal fires and probably some fines...

I thought most smoke spotted in the distance out in the ranges was another 3.0 litre Patrol going "bang".

I live in the middle of the bush on the Central Coast, so I keep a good eye on the RFS website.

The year before last I could smell / see smoke, and lots of RFS sirens. Looked on the website to check if anything big was happening. Nothing in my council area, so I thought it was fine. Later realised that it was on the web, but logged as the wrong council area. The fire was 1 km from my house!

I also found out on the web that a burn off was happening 20m from my house, 3 days before it happened. Sure enough, when I got home there was a flyer in the mail box!!

I was updating an incident in iCON the other day while I was doing duty and noticed that a HR in a nearby zone was listed as 'out of control' I rang my mate from that zone (acting Zone Manager) and inquired about his lost burn He proceeded to nearly have a heart attack because he thought the Duty Officer hadn't let him know.

It took a few minutes to work out that it was the result a a simple keystroke error in the reporting system

Considering that once you press 'authorise', the report goes statewide - meaning literally hundreds of people can see it instantly! Very embarrassing

I think the next release of Icon will fix that issue - you will only be able to enter HRs as contained.
