When I was growing up in Sawtell, it was common knowledge (or a popular myth) that a small town a bit further down the railway line had an extraordinarily high birth rate.
The reason for the high birth rate was widely held to be the fact that the North Coast Mail Train passed through the town in the early hours of the morning and sounded its whistle at the local level crossing.
It seems that having been awoken, the locals all tended to use the same activity to fill in the time until daylight.
