fly in, fly out- negative report, true, or not?

I work FIFO in a government position and have done for the past 5 years. Changed mainly for the money (in my case, allowances on top of regular income) but also was tired of working at large airports, so did it also for the change of lifestyle. Accomodation for us is supplied and paid for.

As it's turned out, I like working FIFO and wont go back to "normal" shifts (have worked 10/14, days/arvos and multi day long shifts) Whether this change contributed to marriage breakdown...........who knows. :(

Capitalism has subsumed us. We are no longer a society, we are now the Human Resource in the economy where political (or lack of) values and industrial/technology values unite and subjugate our social customs, beliefs, and values...we have become the 'means to their ends'....it is capitalist expediency. An expediency that places the $ as being of higher worth than our human values and ultimately, our sustainability here on earth.

The Australian mining industry is the embodiment of pure expediency. Such a ravenous activity....to all those that are involved in the mining industry, what do you believe our existence will be after the mining industry inevitably ends? Is it an ethical pursuit if we have not reasoned and accepted what it means in the long run? Or is it, that we just don't care?

Can I put a dark side to this thread?,a few days ago a FIFO worker was jogging and suffered a cardiac arrest,quite a few people saw him and just assumed that he'd been drinking and was drunk,no one,not one person stopped to help or check him,that man died on the footpath without even a single person even trying to help him.It has been playing on my mind after attending him after he'd layed there for 30mins and no hope of resus,personally I feel disgusted at the people of this town that that could happen.I have the feeling that in these times people aren't looking out for one another as everyone is constantly on the move. The reality is that the mining industry will never end. As current resources "dry up", the price of the commodities mined will escalate, and that will just mean that deposits which are currently uneconomical to mine will in the future become economical - or new processes will be found to mine and process deposits which cannot be managed using current technologies.

But in answer to your question - if the mining industry did "inevitably" end - then all of those who currently seem to take great pleasure in bagging it might have to change their lifestyles a bit and would no doubt find something else to whinge about. Where would they get the fuel to run their Landrovers - and where would the iron, aluminium, silica (glass) and all those other materials come from to make their Landrovers in the first place. :D

Pat, that's a terrible thing to experience. Sometimes it can seem that society is losing it's humanity, I've felt that often, over the years, but thankfully something always happens to restore my faith in human nature.The public reaction to the Qld. floods is an example.I think it is important that those of us with a social conscience , with a heart, don't give up on humanity, no one knows what load a person is carrying, a kind word, a smile, small things make a difference.You've got a big heart , Pat, don't let the load get too heavy. That contention is debatable. Especially when consumption exceeds supply....let us put that in a different way...when greed subsumes rationality.

How long did it take for the ore bodies to form? How long does it take to dig up an ore body and consume it? Do the mathematics on that.

What do you think our current greed will mean to future generations? Do we care?

I started this thread in an effort to discover how the proposed fifo regime for S.E. Qld would impact on the people of the small towns involved. I have no set opinions on fifo, but it seems to provoke passionate debate .All I ask is, please don't make your comments personal.I appreciate the comments, most are extremely interesting.It never ceases to amaze me the diverse cross section of Aussie society in AULRO. FIFO or DIDO does not work for everyone but if the economy does start to tank then many city dwellers will start to look at it when jobs in the cities start to dry up.

Well I dont know how true but I sort of wondered about iron ore running out, speaking to someone at work. They just laughed and reckon at todays consumption rate with know deposits there is at least 18000 years of iron ore supplies left.
