fly in, fly out- negative report, true, or not?

This is a good debate, but at the end of the day if for whatever reason you're not in the mining game then you'll be stuck in first gear in this two-speed economy that we now have in WA. Virtually the entire top two-thirds of WA is off-limits to people like us if we can't get heavily-subsidised housing. And that also means that we can't even dream of actually owning a house.

The rest of the state isn't much more affordable thanks to fifo money, and if that's the way things have headed with this giant boom, then something's wrong.

It's great to hear that some guys can make fifo work, but even though it's the only way we could get our own house in a realistic timeframe we've ruled it out. When you've got a small child, they change practically every day and I don't want to miss that. You could argue that I've made my decision, but, crikey, what a ridiculous decision to have to make: own a house, or see my daughter grow up. Not exactly an improvement on the old days!

I dont think the southern housing industry over inflation is due to FIFO at all. It is more to do with eastern states investors and investors from overseas such as China, Indonesia etc. Talk to any estate agent and this is why house prices have risen here so much. Sydney investors that are used to paying $1m for an investment property think nothing of paying $300k to $700k for a house here and think that is cheap. Then there is China and Hong Kong where you can pay $2m for a 2 bed apartment. The problem is we allow this to happen, There are now estate agents that just go to asia to sell houses in WA.
I agree in the NW there is no chance of buying or renting a house and that is just stupid as there is plenty of room to build cities to accommodate.

I am sick of the litter problem full stop no matter who it is. About time there were more severe and appropriate penalties for deliberate littering. Maybe minimum 8 hrs emu bobbing. Just go to the Newman Fortescue Festival and see the amount of rubbish just dropped on the ground because certain parts of the community just drop their rubbish and are to lazy to walk 10 feet to a skip or bin. I will give the Perth show this, very little litter and they get 1000 times the thoroughfare.
What does really irk me and this is not racist is that a segment of our community that are supposed to have such an affinity for this land, do so much wanton damage through littering and abandonment.
An answer I was given last year when questioned why they do not care and just dump their rubbish was "It is not our rubbish, it is white mans as they make it" taking no responsibility for what they dump or just leave. Sorry but if that is the attitude they should be banned from shops.:twisted: Should apply to all people.

I don't know about the southern real estate market being just foreign investors as the fifo mob have got to spend their money somewhere, and often that means on real estate. And sometimes owning a few houses to rent out. No doubt it's both foreigners and mining money, all discovering WA at the same time.

My wife and I just can't get our heads around it, with our conversations going, "But who the hell would spend that much to live in Perth???"

So the mining boom has impacted on real estate in Perth? Where will this end? Does industry in Perth benefit from the mines, as in goods and services. I'm sure it should, and that should be a good thing. Do you have over there overseas interests [read China] buying up properties, mining leases, and similar, I don't know how much of Qld is locally owned now. Bob

Yeah, it has. So instead of most people being able to afford something decent to live in, now you're forced into an economy that's catering for the bigger money. I haven't looked into the affordability index for Perth real estate but there's no way it's been a gentle climb! Of course, there are a lot of mugs out there, too, and I think a big part of the market has been driven by buyers getting in deeper than they would have many years ago, scrabbling for something before the prices go up again.

No doubt many industries have benefitted from the big boom, but once again, it's a two-speed economy, and some are winners and some are left behind. Not very healthy for the long term.

It sounds like the Chinese have been buying big in the iron ore side but I really have to start doing some proper research into this when I've got the time! But there's no doubt that a lot is changing quickly - where it will lead, I wonder.

House prices are high because people who can't afford them get a government grant to buy them so it inflates the price,they can't afford kids so the government gives them a grant to have them,they can't afford to pay for thier house the government gave them money to buy so both parents need to work so the governmant gives them a grant for childcare,and around and around it goes.There is allot of work going on in Newman as we speak and people are needed to do the work,FIFO is the best way to do it. Pat, my experience of house prices in my area is this, people from Melbourne and Sydney , get sick of their lifestyle, sell their average houses for a lot, buy much better houses here for less, the estate agents wet their pants, advertise in the southern states, the locals can't afford the prices they ask, [ unless they work in the mines] For anyone to say the gov. grant will inflate house prices as much as they have been is out of touch with the 2nd part of our two stage economy. The real world is outside the mining bubble, sorry, mate. Bob

Bob,lots of people got the first home buyers grant and then entered the market pushing up prices,the same people you talk about also moved to Port Macquarie,Coffs Harbour etc and houses there are out of reach. Pat

Sadly in a lot of ways you are dead on local government the miners and the local locals should get together and make a positive stance on this subject. regional Australia is looking worse than blighty in some parts and there are so many more people there in comparison to here and they have had a lot longer to make it look like a dump
