This is a good debate, but at the end of the day if for whatever reason you're not in the mining game then you'll be stuck in first gear in this two-speed economy that we now have in WA. Virtually the entire top two-thirds of WA is off-limits to people like us if we can't get heavily-subsidised housing. And that also means that we can't even dream of actually owning a house.
The rest of the state isn't much more affordable thanks to fifo money, and if that's the way things have headed with this giant boom, then something's wrong.
It's great to hear that some guys can make fifo work, but even though it's the only way we could get our own house in a realistic timeframe we've ruled it out. When you've got a small child, they change practically every day and I don't want to miss that. You could argue that I've made my decision, but, crikey, what a ridiculous decision to have to make: own a house, or see my daughter grow up. Not exactly an improvement on the old days!
