So that's at least 3 good ones out there.

Maybe I'm clinically insane for owning a P38 and a Freelander.

With Freelanders reputation as being unreliable and the P38's reputation for being a money pit, you are certainly a glutton for punishment!!

    Beat me to it!
Look , buy her something Japanese like a Camry , Corolla, or a Mazda 323.

If she is like any other teenage girl she will not give a rat's what it is as long as it is wheels.

It is YOU that lusts after a Freelander "just to see what they are like" . I know the feeling. I was looking at cheap diesels last night.

I can guarantee is you buy a Freelander, it will turn out like the thread which started " what can I do to waterproof my 38A" ie LOTS OF MONEY.
BTW don't take your 38A into deep water.
    Regards Philip A

Well except for a major failure just after I bought it, my diesel Freelander has been the most reliable and economical car I have owned - cheap to run and service as well.

Well I bought a 1992 Camry on my daughter's behalf 1 1/2 years ago with 340KK on it, and it has gone perfectly except for normal wear and tear.

My daughter also inherited her mother's Mazda 121 which has now done 260 or so Kk and still uses no oil between changes and has had virtually no problems except for wear and tear.

Don't take any notice of this "sealed for life" crap put out by LandRover, service of all fluids is a must. I recently changed the Diff oil which had been in my car since new (I am the second owner) and when it came out it was like tar. I also did the IRD unit (it was OK because services had been done on it before) also keep the engine maintenance up to date, I use a Nulon brand synthetic oil for the engine.
If it was me looking for a Freelander 1 again I would go diesel as a first choice and a year model after mid 2001 when they had problems with the IRD sorted!!
Thats my 2c worth and good luck in your search!!
ps. A 2002 model V6 at $6 seems to be a very good price. Is it high mileage???

No she wants a 4x4 to go bush with us. I even offered to buy her a corvette, a mgf convertible, a BMW convertible, Astra Convertible, Commodores, Statesmans etc all at good prices. May go back to the original plan of a Jeep. No Corolla will grace my drive way.

Why not a late model D1 - they are good value for money.

If something smaller - then a Forrester is a good buy.

However - the jeep wrangler is also good value.

(that said - I agree with Andy - there was this hot girl at uni who drove a S1 her father had rebuilt for her... )

You should consider a Suzuki Vitara.
My daughter had one and it was great, and I also owned one and it was great. They handle well are relatively economical and are good up to a point on the highway. (They get noisy over 110Kmh or so)

A 2 door convertible is the go. Buy one with injection as the carby ones do not like steep hills. They will go surprising places and girls love the soft top, which by the way is FAR superior to soft tops on jeeps and LRs and does not leak and has the ability to be folded back half way like a sunroof.

The only bad part AFAIK is that the coil packs die on them, but I can tell you that if thet is the only problem you have then you will be way ahead.
