Please school me up on CB radios

Dual watch feature will let u scan with a priority channel so when scaning if ur mate takes it jumps back even if u are receiving signal from your scan function. 40 ch uhfs can suffer from decreased signal due to you band with being halfed for the 80 Chan frequincy. Basicly its been set up as 1 41 2 42 3 43 etc, that being said old uhfs are more likely to suffer from poor signal, this happens because over time say 8 years they drift off frequancy anyway. 40ch radios will be legal till at least 2020 when band with has been completly changed making 40ch baisicly redundant. By this time it will probably be digital so then 80's will be out. Lol

This will have some success until the scanning radio pics up on the channel you are talking on and you get heaps of feedback rendering the set up useless. If you can get the scanning radio to skip the radio freq that you are going to talk on you might have a chance.

That dual watch reference in the link above is possible because you have two receivers in the same box, one on AM on one frquency band and the other most likely on FM on another frequency band.

The freq separation is part of the problem as transmitting a signal many times stronger than a received signal will render the receiver (or nearby receiver) deaf to any other signal.

I suspect that what the OP is after can be achieved on a modern radio with a scan capaibility as long as they are prepared to forego listening on one freq while transmitting on the other and only listen to one freq once active. Even with a priority system you will not be able to listen to both channels at the same time (that's why it is called a priority system).

SELCAL is a selective squelch more often used to share a channel where your squelch will only break when the seleceted SELCAL code has been detected.

If you want to go with the handheld to monitor another chanel, I got a couple of these FDC radios from the website below and have reprogrammed one of them to the 80 channel system. They're a good little radio for the money.

i have a uniden unit and the dual watch works very well
you can sit on say CH 17 with your mates and listen to CH 40 at the same time

CH 17 will over ride CH 40 and you can only broadcast on CH 17 but with a press of a button on the mic. and you can broadcast on ch 40. press the button again and your back using ch 17 whilst listening to ch 40.

much cheaper then two units....

This is exactly what I want, thank you. I shall follow up the Uniden that you mention.

I am suprised at how unknown this is, I thought it would be a common thing and quite sensible.

as for 40 channels, yes, I am aware that 80 channels is now being produced at teh half spacing of 40 channels but Channel 40 I am sure will still be the public / calling up / general channel
