Thread: Earth tremor in Adelaide

Yep. Got it down here. Sounded like a semi going past.

Interesting - I did not feel anything; but I woke up for no apparent reason within a few minutes of that time.

It woke me up in Torrens Park. Enough movement to get things on the bedside table rattling.

US geological survey logged the quake at 3.3 magnitude.
It was real.
There was a larger one 3000k West of Albany a few hours later.

Yep, I woke up in Morphett Vale at 2:22 am and at 2:23 am wham! But it was not like any of the tremors I have ever experienced in Adelaide before. There was no vibration, no shuddering, no sound, nothing in the house shaking. It was just one big soundless jolt that moved the whole house under me. Felt as if a giant had just kicked the house once. Even the dogs did not feel it coming, but burst out barking immediately after the jolt, and went quiet after a few barks as if they weren't sure if they had been dreaming.
There was one weird thing associated with it: a pulsing mid-frequency sound like a distant differential of a truck. BUT there was no doppler effect plus it did not get louder (as in approaching) or quieter (as in going away) plus anything passing by this house has to slow down for a roundabout and go through gear changes accelerating on the other side. But this weird sound, like an old-fashioned sci fi movie flying saucer, started at the earth jolt and ran unchanged for about half a minute then stopped as abruptly as it had begun. I lay awake for a while feeling weirded out. As a kid in the northeast suburbs in the 50s and 60s there were lots of tremors especially in summer. Mum and I always woke up inexplicably before the dogs and cats got howling, we'd meet in the kitchen, puzzled, and a few minutes later the shaking would begin. We realized that during the big quake of '54 that split Mum's house she was pregnant with me and terrified the house was going to fall down, so that might explain our mutual sensitivity to an imminent tremor. We'd go nuts living in California or Japan!

The noise you describe is interesting.... anyone else who felt the 'shake" hear it?

(Could it have been the pulse (due to increase) being 'felt/heard' thru your ears ? - can be common after a shock or scare.)
