So why are people telling me to run away from a Passat?
Probably the same reason why many people told me to run away from Landrovers.
They've never driven or owned one themselves, but have heard a story about a mate's wife's second cousin's father's drinking mate's car that had a flat tyre on the side of the road one day, and the wheel nuts were difficult to get off. ;)
In my last job (based in the city) - I had rental Corollas for a while before the company decided to buy a new car. I was offered the choice of either a new Corolla or a new Holden Astra. Having a few months experience in new Corollas already, I opted for the Astra. Definitely the right choice. I'll admit, couldn't fault the Corollas - never had a single problem with them. But I'd still take the Astra any day given the same choice again.
Now if I'd been given the choice of a VW in there as well, I'd have taken it. :D
Toyota build very good cars.
But they should all be white..................because that's how bland they are. ;) (only my opinion of course)
If I had the choice (and the money) I'd have a Golf as a second car.
Look I totally agree that the Polo is a superior drive to a Corolla. I rented one in Seth Efrica and it had a really solid feel but was gutless as it had the base SA engine.
BUT they are tiny.
I bought a Honda Jazz which has none of the quality solid feel of Polo but the boot and storage space and the Magic seats just make it so much more practical and I am pretty confident it will be relaible.
I must admit it is now being booked for its second recall to replace the RH window switch after checking the headlight loom, but it just shows Honda are really on the ball for customer service. Nothing else has gone wrong. Pretty good for a 2006 build. Honda dealers however seem just as rapacious as VW dealers.

My Golf goes pretty well for a 4cyl 1.6 TD, plenty of torque for overtaking on country roads, and I get 3.5-4l/100km, or up to 80mpg.
It feels solid, not a creak or rattle (though it is only 4 months and 7000km old). I've driven many a Corolla, there is a biiiiiiiiiig difference.
