Maybe because of my friends' experiences with VWs.
1 Golf convertible 2004? engine ran out of oil because of known problem by VW. Refused warranty. Don't know cost to owner but LOTS.
2 2009? Golf/Jetta DSG failed just out of warranty . Share of bill around $3K.
Valve to activate Cat cleanout failed ( as described by owner) $2.5K.Same car
Never met a Corolla owner with a problem.

True , true, but VWs are german Toyotas ( but much less relaible) and the two owners I listed also have no interest in cars, as evidenced by the woman who ran out of oil.

I like the Passat but that many people have told me to steer clear of second hand VW's it's not funny.
Politely disagree, Philip.
I've owned, do own, and know plenty of people who swear by VW as a brand. Reliability issues, certainly in European conditions, have been a rarity in my experience.
Over here, though, it may be a different kettle of fish.
*EDIT* - I should say that two companies I worked for ran a car fleet that was 50%+ VW. The cars were very well received by the employees, and reliability was excellent.
The only issue that was encountered was during the first 5000miles or so, there was one particular engine that went through a lot of oil.
x2. My sister bought a new corolla, and had a few minor items fail under warranty - e.g. the fuel guage.
I know plenty of people in Germany who own golfs and polos - who have never had any problems whatsoever.
We had a polo diesel as a hire car for a few weeks in europe (and owned an older golf for a few years in Germany). Both were fantastic little cars, and if I ever bought a small car then it would be a polo for sure.
On my 3rd Golf now and no issues.
They make a hell of a lot of cars and some will have issues, imagine that!!!
Plenty of Toyotas have issues too, just look on their forums on chat to their mechanics.
VW will in next 3 years be biggest vehicle manufacturer in the world according to german newspaper reports.
They are much cheaper there and hence more common bit like commodores etc here. Just they are well made, ride well and have technology built into them that one day could just maybe save your life.
We love ours and can't wait for series 7 next year.
Drive one, than a Corolla and see the difference, its that simple.
