The septics coined the phrase and as we and the rest of the world slavishly follow the US we get the same terminology.

Despite what people say about how cool it is inside their black car, it's only because their environmentally unfriendly air/con is still working.

You only have to walk down the lot at any car yard and place your hand on the bonnet and feel the temp. The white cars are always cooler, even against the silver ones.

Don't worry about your SUV, it will be crushed and recycled in a few years and then you can go back into your Defender with almost vertical glass that admits far less sun than comparable windows and go out bush to places (and come home) from wence no SUV has ever returned.

Yes, the Americanisms being used in Australia annoy the hell out of me, as does the trend to copy their spelling etc. None of the vehicles they call SUV's are utes and it's largely the media who enslave themselves and hence our young ones to the Americanisms that are proliferating.
During Mondays heat in Sydney my old white Defender travelled comfortably with A/C that doesn't work and I felt perfectly comfortable. Sensible car that it is.

I believe their intended use was directed towards vehicles such as the Ford Explorer that is not a full on 4WD in the standards such as Land Rovers, Patrols, Cruisers, etc., but still have some decent 4WD capability (I owned one for years and it was more than adequate for my use - I used to drive on my local beach and launch my boat, the low range and center diff lock ensured I always got out).
I believe the term has since taken off and many manufacturers, particularly those based in Asia keep trying to stretch the term further and further, to the point that you now have the ASX claiming to be an SUV. Anyone remember Toyota a few years ago trying to coin there own? AUV - Action Utility Vehicle.
