Just read an article trip report from an 4wd club we're considering. The trip was Googs track.
There were 2 vehicles, a Patrol and a Prado, current model.
The Prado experienced cracking of the spokes in 2 of its alloy wheels. Has anyone heard of this before? Tyre pressures were kept at around 25/28 psi apparently. One front wheel, the other was a rear.
Anyone heard of this before? Sounds like the sort of thing that could bring the average traveller undone in a hurry since few would be looking for a problem lke this.
I haven't heard what Toyota had to say about it but suspect that they would brush it off as 'Being used beyond normal performance expectations' or something like that.

yes, it occurrs up here with the rough treatment some of the mines vehicles get. ....some of the companies here are moving away from toyota to Mitsu and Isuzu.....when you see the number of toyotas here on mechanics hoists having major operations at a young age its no wonder.
most workshops have a quantity of shattered alloy wheels lying around, they dont complain....business is booming for them

we have toyota work vans, haven't had any wheel problems, but the few issues we have had, toyota do there utmost not to be interested.
we have found them to be the worst manufacturer we have ever dealt with, when it comes to anything under warranty, the complete opposite to LRA,& a few others we have dealt with.
I have a 150 Prado at work at the moment. It spends a lot of its time on some pretty rough roads. I have previously also had four 120 Prados and one 90 Prado. All but the 90 and the last of the 120's have had alloy wheels.
I've never had any problem with cracks in the wheels, nor have I ever heard of any other Prado having similar problems.
But would I own one as my own personal vehicle - not a chance. As they get newer, they are getting more and more plastic in them, and I'm constantly fixing bits that are falling off them (especially the new one).
My job is changing to a Perth based position where I will regularly drive out to different work projects that the company has, both in mining & civils. Part of the deal that I have been offered is a choice between a vehicle allowance, where I buy / lease and use my own vehicle for work purposes as well as private, or the company will provide me with a vehicle for work and some private use - but it will be a new Prado. I'll be going with the allowance and getting a vehicle of my choice. Test drove a new Discovery 4 on Friday and after driving one of those, you'd never seriously consider anything offered by Toyota. I'm still undecided between a new D4, possibly a low km D3 (if I can find a good one), or a new VW Amarok. Toyota (or anything else Japanese) is not on my list to look at.

there's a recall on Navara's for having cracked alloys. From what i understand, all alloys are being replaced. Not sure what the build dates are though.
There's a recall on the new Prados at the moment too, if they are fitted with a genuine Toyota cargo barrier (as my current work vehicle is). Apparently the "emergency" hammer supplied with the cargo barrier "may not" be capable of breaking the side window glass in the event of an emergency.
The stupid thing is that you cannot simply return the hammer to a Toyota dealer for replacement, or have the dealer that supplied the vehicle or the cargo barrier simply send you a new hammer - you have to take the vehicle in to the nearest Toyota dealer to have the hammer replaced. In my case, that's a 4 hour drive from the minesite to Port Hedland - just to get a new hammer in case the one I have now "may not" break the glass. I think I'll just swing the hammer a bit harder - bloody idiots.![]()
Cheers .........
