Natural cat deterrent

Know they are killing birds etc as they are always bloody around the mouth. Getting into the kids cubby etc.

Suggestions as while I'm up for slingshots, supersoakers etc not into sitting up late at night when it's around. I know dencorub is a cack with the dogs. We had a rottie and in the end show him the box and he'd run a mile.

You don't know they don't have ID unless you have scanned them.

Hire a trap place it on your property trap them and take them to the pound. Owners have to pay to get them out and if you keep doing it eventually the owners will realise that its becoming a very costly exercise and should do something about it.

If you do trap them and they are feral they will be humanely euthanased anyway, and likely if they dont have ID and the owners do not come to pick them up they will still be euthanased after their holding period.

If you talk nicely to a council ranger they may even lend you a trap

About twenty years ago we built a new house in a rural area and had a tom cat squirting on the back door.
I emptied the pepper shaker on the door step.
Never had a problem with the cat again. Apparently they have a nice big sniff before they squirt...and pepper is not to their liking.

The only way cats would be getting your chooks is if the pen in which you have (or had) built is not secure...

Cats will not dig or destroy a pen to get in to kill chooks (they would probably have a go if they were free ranging though), but foxes will they are far more cunning so if this is happening I would suggest foxes are your problem more so than cats.

I agree with you though a lot of cat owners are very irresponsible. how ever it is not easy to train a cat to stay in a yard, the responsible thing for an owner to do would be to build a cat park within their premise (not always practical), or keep the cat inside.

When this doesn't happen just trap the cat and take it to the pound, I don't believe there is a need to make an animal suffer just because the owner is not responsible its not the animals fault the animal is only following its natural instinct which is stronger in some then others:)

saw a documentary on domestic cats a while ago,they put GPS tracking devices on them.Much to the amazement of the owners,some were doing a 20K jaunt every night.

Thanks for your comments, Yes I know Foxes (and some dogs) are also problem , we lost 4 chooks in one weekend away, thats why our new chook enclosure is 100% fox / cat (but not rat) proof, and yes we do like to let the chooks free range, and yes the cats do stalk them, our video survelance pick up about dozens of cats and only one fox , no dogs, on the way to the chook pen.

I agree with your sentiments and like I said before I do hate to see any animal suffer, but cats beware.

with out entering into the cat debate, I am one of those people that stand up and say that 1080 poison is a valuable tool in controlling feral animals. To say that it isn't selective is a bit of a furphy. It is a naturally occurring poison derived from native trees and is highly effective on canines and less effective on cats. It is very difficult to kill a rat with it.

I had one of my working dogs die from a bait that I had laid to control feral dogs, it was very fast acting and from what I could see relatively pain free for the dog. Poison should always be the last resort.

If I catch 'em they ain't going to no pound. Got one with the broom going all javelin on it this morning. I'd gone outside to use the other (read my) lavvy and it must have been under the table scared initially and then when I came out we were eye to eye. I inconspicuously grabbed the broom as it made a run stupidly past me for it's own yard. The brrom head and it's head met head on.

You know admitting online that you have deliberately taken a broom to a cats head is not very clever.
