    Ignition barrel help!

    I have a series 3 that I dont have a key for..
My other car has "imploded" the engine so now I need the S3 rather urgently..

I need to find a key to fit a barrel marked "FS914"

DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY IDEAS WHERE I CAN OBTAIN THIS KEY QUICKLY??

Alternatively any ideas on where I could obtain the whole ig. barrel?

lastly any ideas on approximate price for these?

    Cheers

    Hi Digger,
If I recall correctly, when I needed a key for my 86" (I had no key for the barrel like you), I took the barrel down to a locksmith but they in fact cut a new key using the code only.

Might be worth ringing a locksmith to see if they can cut a key off the code only.

    Cheers,
    Chris

From memory the locksmith did not need the actual barrel to cut the key. He looked the code up in his manual and cut a key off that. The barrel was only used to check that it fitted afterwards.

Cost was cost of key cutting only (<$20).

Digger, have you tried all your other Land Rover keys, including door keys? In my experience, if you try enough keys you eventually find one that fits. I regulary use my S111 door key in the ignition of my S11a.

    Cheers, Mick.

Digger, what about a hot wire from the battery to the coil and using the starting handle?

I am assuming that it is a petrol engine of course,

If you pull the switch out (assuming it is a non steering lock type like mine) and remove the barrel by pushing the little spring loaded pin in and withdrawing the barrel, you can insert a square object or screwdriver into the square hole and start the vehicle. Otherwise try a simple lock pick made from some stiff wire with a bend at the end, they only have 4 or 5 plates in the lock and are probably worn so can be easilly manipulated. the one I just pulled out took about 10 seconds to pop each plate and then it can be turned with a flat object. As a temporary fix this should be the quickest option.

My S3 ute didn't have a key for the door locks and the ignition key didn't work them. The code on the door barrels were of no use to the local locksmith so he couldn't cut it off them - basically because his records didn't go beyond Defenders. However, once he actually had the door lock in his hands he worked the combination out with feelers in a couple of minutes and produced a workable set of door keys and a spare ignition key. Cost was about $15.

    Cheers,
