ramblingboy42 - does this mean that 265/75 x 16 (31") tyres are ok? Just anything bigger would be asking for trouble?

I could be wrong, but your 245/70 x 16 kumhos should be about 29.5". How come they rubbed initially? What did you do to stop it?

Does anyone ever have trouble with the tyres rubbing anywhere other than the guards, i.e. steering components etc.? Guards can be easily modified by the looks of some of these threads - hardware not so much. What offset do the rims need to be?

What economy do the TDi's get with the bigger tyres? I understand that the norm is around 9-L/100kms... What do you get?

Sorry, this doesn't answer your tire question, however if this one is still available, you might have a look at it? i considered it before going with a Td5, mainly cos im not manual qualified (legally anyway ;) )

Hi and welcome,

You must be aware that the Disco is essentially a re-bodied RR chassis. There are a lot of posts in this thread from disco lovers who have probably never sat in a RRC.

The RRC has FAR better vis all round because all the window columns are way narrower. In the back there none of the el-cheapo plastic cubby boxes that a Disco has.

I'm not slagging Discos, saw one today that a mate bought for less than 3k with a rebuilt 300TDI that I would have grabbed in an instant.

With your budget you should be able to find a DREAM early 80's RRC with all the fruit (driveline, diffs, lpg, etc) and no electronics to give grief. You could also buy a 94 RRC with all the stock fruit (air suspension, etc) for about 4k and work from there, depends on how complex you like your vehicles.

The RRC is an all time classic for a lot of good reasons.
