Haven't been up the Gap for a while. Is the road still one lane controlled by traffic lights to alternate between up & down traffic?
No Brian, three lane most of the way as per usual. There is re-surfacing and line-marking happening ATM and 40' open top containers filled with (landslide overburden?) dirt for retaining walls just below the summit.
I remember about 1968-69 when a series of landslides forced the closure of the highway there. Most of the traffic heading in and out of Brisbane used the Heifer Creek Road until repairs were affected. Quite a few exciting times were had with heavy traffic of semi-trailers and overnighters mixing in with the cars and buses on this narrow twisty stretch of hills, blind corners, narrow bridges. Within days most of the bridge rails were broken.
Ah, Heifer Creek Road, the birthplace of Theiss Bros.
gee learn something new every day ;)Quote:

i use heifer creek for when i go up the range as it is easier on the 300TDi disco as it most probably needs a rod clean, went this way to Goombarra via Grantham.
i would not like to drive on Heifer creek road with a heap of transports and most probably 'B' doubles and i am an ex transport driver!
so close to 14 months to repair the 'Gap' after last years rain :o
HC Rd is not double rated so they would have to go via Toowoomba.
