how do you know it was a recovery strap that broke and not just rope?

I don't - but the way it flicked back had all the hallmarks of a snatch strap.

I dont know how often it happens up there these days, but after Tracy lots of people bought Tojo's with some of the insurance payout and quite a few drove them off Vesty's on a low tide(0r onto or into low tidal creeks)No one would attempt to rescue them once the tide came in and it was just sit back with a beer time and watch them disappear.

    Hi,
so how would one go about getting it out?
Close to town, 5 wooden sleepers from the garden shop, jack each wheel from a sleeper, put a sleeper under each wheel, drive off is what comes to mind, but I'm a novice at recovery.
What do some of the more experienced 4wd drivers think?
    cheers

not sure if you mean that as

how do you know it wasnt just a rope being used to recover or

if it was a rope and a snatch strap that was being used how do you know it was the strap that failed?

    IMHO

it was a rope recovery @ the 27 second mark as the troopie didnt slow down at all and the paj made no obvious attempt to move then about 25 or so(real time) minutes later (assuming the boat on trailer hadnt been moved) they came back with some better gear and had a go as a snatch recovery @ about the 43 second mark you can see the troopy giving it clarkson the line coming up and then the paj moving before the troopie driver clutches it and gets pulled back

Once your cars taken a dip in the ocean i wouldnt bother trying to recover it, just let the ocean swallow it up.

Any locals know if there is any reason he needed to drive where he did or was he just as stupid as he looked?

"Fellas, let's not get bogged down insulting the guy. The rising tide of criticism is drowning out what could be his watershed moment, after all. This driver was simply a bit wet behind the ears and found himself over his head, so how about instead of ramping up the ridicule, we throw him a lifeline instead. I'm honestly ashamed that things have sunk so low in this town. Tsk tsk. "

The only way that I can see new LandRovers being better in this scenario is that official LandRover approved insurance apparently covers most legitimate offroad activity.

Absolutely I mean it should have been apparent that he deserved our sympathy for being a simpleton when he listened to the advise of a council worker who "thought".
