Moving to Gladstone
I might be looking at a bit of a career change and a move to Gladstone.
My current job has me working away regularly, but the new job will have me home every day. So, the move is very tempting.
I've googled Gladstone to see what's what, but was wondering if anyone could advise some pros and cons, however small they may be.
We'll be giving up quite a bit, so any opinions are welcome.
Cheers

Do a lot of homework on accommodation. Big shortage of it and as such a premium is charged for what is available.

Saw that on realestate.com. Another 'boom' town.
Any members live or work there?
Appreciate your opinions. Schooling, things to do etc.
I read that Gladstone is the beginning of croc country so water sports wouldn't be too common?

I was up there last week. From an outsiders point of view it is a very busy place. I stayed at a local caravan park, there's people living there full time in tents, normal people not deadbeats but they just can't get into rentals. At 5am the place was like rush hour. Check out Tannum Sands, IMO nicer and only 25km out. One thing's for sure you wont feel out of place in your high viz gear.

We were there for 20years. It has nearly every sport for kids except ice skating. In the education dept it is known as the place not to go , but when the teachers get there, they do not want to leave. After the boom of the 70's things settled down but now its all go all the time again. I go back there a few times a year as my 2 grandsons are there. As we got older, the humidity made us lose lots of motivation, so we moved up into the hills.

Gladstone? Yuk! Lived there for 5 years in the 1970s when the population was 17,000. I was a rocket scientist before I moved there but the average IQ of the populace combined with the stiflingly humid climate took its toll on me and now I'm barely qualified to be a janitor.Still have relatives there, if there are any left as people tend towards canibalism up that way.

PS: dont go near the water there and give up eating all seafood.
Wont belong before people start to complain that their kids toes are dropping off.
Thank Gawd you dont have to drive thru the place on yer way south, eh.
Cheers.

PS to the above PS:
From the turnoff on the highway you can see the brown haze in the distance, stemming from all of the industrial crap in the air over the town.
All aircraft landing in the place have to make instrument approach only.
Births with six fingers on each hand are considered normal and lucky it wasn't more.
DangermouseMan, I hope we have been helpful for you.
Cheers.

I've given the subject a little more serious thought, but no,still can't think of anything positive to say about Gladstone, except that it was a useful stepping stone from Melbourne for my 4wd explorations further North and West.
I must concede that my perception of Gladstone and indeed Qld in general was clouded by the Joh Bjelke Peterson era. I mean, if that blithering idiot was Top Dog then, what did that say about the rest of the populace?
