Question Car Insurance... Doing my head in...

Okay so I think it's time to get some Insurance for the big 130.

I know I'm taking a huge risk by putting it off till now but the big girl doesn't travel far anyway... We bought the defender to take us around OZ and we are saving her for that. at the moment it just sits there in the shed and waits until we go camping. The next trip is planned for May/June when we will head off to Exmouth for a couple of weeks.

    The Defender is a 2000 Td5 130 with about 145000 k's on the clock.
It is in very good condition and runs like a dream.
I paid 19K for it last year.
we haven't quite finished decking it out the way we want it just yet but we are getting close.

by the time we will of finished we would of spent $15,000+ in aftermarket gear on the defender.

I know it's lots of $$$ but it will be our house for 2+ years when we finally set off too do the big lap and beyond. who knows it may be our house for 5 years...

so I called some insurers recently...
First off a few just plain said no because of all the aftermarket gear we have on the defender.
then the ones that say yes under value the car and undervalue all the gear we have added.

they pretty much added $2000 to the (already undervalued) value for $10,000 worth of gear.

Agreed value pretty much means "well the book says it's worth some where between $8,000 and $15,450... pick a number somewhere between that and it will be insured for that amount"

and then if I go for Market value how do I know they wont say "yep that's worth $12,000" when the worst happens... and then what? I've paid $1,200 for X amount of years then paid $900 for excess and got shafted for the trouble...

also only being 21 they seem to give me a hard time...

am I just going to have to settle for the best one and think "well if the worst happens at-least I wont loose everything"

Grrr! writing all that just made me more angry!

or is there some nice guys in the insurance world too? or at least reasonable?

    please help

You need to contact Shannons, I've had my Triumphs with them for years and no problems. They do understand that some vehicles are old and others are looked after with extras and they value them accordingly.

They will have a look at the vehicle (they actually do physical inspections), or photos and value it from there, rates are usually better than others. Also if you tell them what you paid and what you have spent you will be fine.

TCIS will cover all accessories but you need to be a member of a 4wd club. It all costs though, my quote is around $1300 for a 2008 D3 with around $10K of aftermarket goodies on it. 60%NCB as well

Being under 25 they'll either refuse to cover you, or only give mediocre cover.
You may as well not exist.

But generally speaking Land Rovers (and Defenders) do not have an accurate market value anyway.

Thats a bugger about their attitude to age because Shannons are good in respect of cover and price IMHO. My Defender is with them.

I would have thought an insurer looking at a young person in a Defender would take a different attitude to if they had a WRX ! hardly going to be tearing up teh streets in illegal drags are you !
It's not broken. It's "Carbon Neutral".

Shannons were the only ones interested in true agreed value for mine also. I had to ring twice, as the first time I didn't appear a big enough enthusiast. Being a club member will help your cause, and explain that you don't just bush bash on the weekend, but are truly an enthusiast.

I imagine some club will let you join without attendance.

As someone else mentioned, is it possible to insure it under a relatives older insurance with you as a nominated driver?

You need to be very careful with that. Technically I think its called 'Fronting' and is illegal. (If the named extra driver is really the main one)
