Personally I'd. Come across following The Savannah Way (google it, theres a mob that will send out a tourist booklet if you ask) and come through karumba and then down to Lawn Hill NP and then via Camooweal. I can't help much with the territory, but depending on my shifts at the time I'm happy to show you around out here a little.
I live about 20k's from the start of the Savannah Way, and this is what I was planning on heading west on, until I head south. Might do a bit of a loop on the way home, and come through Charters Towers, and Townsville, and then up along the coast from there.
Again Thanks for the suggestions, and keep them coming!
Cheers,
Ken
Boggy hole is on the Finke river south of Hermannsberg, a gravel track that runs south to Ernest Giles rd, permanent water and a great overnight camp between Alice and Kings Canyon with plenty of time to check out Palm Valley.
Also in the East Macdonnells there's Glenn Annie gorge only a picture can describe it!
First pic is Glen Annie, 2nd is Boggy Hole.

I will be picking up my wife from the Alice Springs Airport on the 11th of August, and want to head towards the Uluru Campground. According to Google Maps, it is about a 6 hr drive. Where do you recommend that we stay along the way, to break up the drive?
Cheers,
Ken
we did this not long ago but we went from cairns to parranella park or how ever it is spelled we stayed there the night it was awesome. along the way to there we went through atherton and some other little towns i cant remember the names but they were quite good.

Thanks Numpty,
Google maps can't calculate how to get to Rainbow Valley conservation reserve from Alice Springs. It will locate it on the map, but I don't see any tracks or roads to get to it. Is it marked from the Highway? Is it easy to locate? I don't want to be driving around trying to find it if my wife is tired from her flight. And yes we will be camping.
Thanks,
Ken
Yeah easy to find Ken and is signposted. About 65 k's south on the Stuart to the turnoff and then 24k's to the east. And dont forget to pick up some firewood on the way in.
