Some good friends of ours bought a captiva (two years ago brand new) and had to replace the engine after 3500kms due to a 'harmonic balancer issue'. Was covered by warranty so all good. Also had a wheel bearing go (they live in remote WA on dirt roads) and the Holden dealer refused to warranty it because it was due to driving on dirt roads. Is it a cross-over vehicle or not? They eventually got it replaced on threat of legal action but had to pay the labour. The bill with labour included was just shy of $1000. For a wheel bearing :eek:. Hence in our friendship circles they're now know as the Craptiva's.
On the other hand, I have heard good things about the peugeots. Although I'm led to believe that to replace a diesel injector can be astronomical. Also I worry about the diesel particulate filters on euro 3/4/5 cars as I've heard that they need to be run for at least 1/2 an hour to properly self clean. Many of our trips would be shorter than that and I worry that it would 'gum' up. Hmmm....

I used to have 308 2.0L petrol for a company vehicle, great vehicle never had any issues, except getting used to the auto gearbox.
They are very different in there auto box operation, downloads are easy to fix issues but can be a pain.
The 308 Diesel on the other hand (in manual) what a rocket ship & excellent on fuel, i mean excellent.
The manual is sensational, but the auto is ok(if u can get used to the funny shift pattern's:p)
Ever thought of a Volvo V50 Diesel either in D5(2.4Ltr-rocket ship) or 2.0L(fuel friendly & a little torquey machine)
Again great on fuel & very comfortable, great safety aspects too.

Toureg and VW generally are reputed to be "outrageous" in their servicing and spares costs compared to other brands... neighbour has a toureg with the small diesel (whatever that means) ... has cost him mega bucks for injectors not long after it was out of warranty...
