Thread: More Land Rovers in Africa

Hello from Brisbane.

My work takes me to Africa from time to time and there is always some spare time for a bit of R&R.

Last trip offered an opportunity to head up the Sani Pass (2865m) which connects the Republic of Lesotho to Kwa Zulu Natal in South Africa. It was orginally a rough mule track for taking goods between the two places and was constructed as a bridle track in about 1913. The first vehicle to drive up it was in 1948 when a RAF Spitfire veteran did it in a Willys with the help of a gang of native labourers, winches, a lot of rope and a fair reserve of nerves. Tours started soon after in Series 1 80" with a jerry can, blanket and thermos..........

Apart from the regular trade that still moves up and down it each day, the Pass remains something of a playground for Land Rover enthusiasts who like to stop over at the pub at the top which is the highest in Africa. I didn't have time to take a hire truck so opted for one of the tours and let someone else do the driving.

Great place, although the locals live a fairly mean life up there.

Great stuff. Food security via the development of agriculture is very much needed in Africa.

I am currently awaiting a document to take me over to Mozambique for work.

My wife and I have a Mozambican friend who is an Agronomist and she is currently studying her Masters at Qld Uni. Her thesis is to be on sustainable agriculture.

There are certainly a lot of Landys in Africa.
