Cheapest way to send a parcel O/S ?

Specifically looking to send a bottle of rum so value approx $40 and weight around 1 kg (with packaging)

Looked on the Aus Post website and cheapest option foe postage to USA is $36 !!!!

There MUST be a cheaper option, surely ?

Australia Post overseas parcel charges are incredibly expensive. Do they still have surface mail to the USA ? This may be cheaper but takes 8-13 weeks.

Unless the rum is something special, it can probably be bought in the USA under $20. Liquor is not highly taxed there.

You may not get it at very liquor store but but all things alcohol from Australia (beer, wine, bundy) can be obtained. It comes down to the size of the population of where you are sending it too. I drank more Australian wine when I lived in Canada than I have at any other time, more often cheaper than you can get the stuff here.

Google search to find a liquor store in the US with your product choice, have it sent to your destination from there.

The laws of trade between the states in the matter of alcohol is nothing like here. It is highly illegal. It makes wine producers' task of exporting there a matter of dealing individually with each state as if it is a different country. You must find a liquor store that stocks The Bear within the state your recipient lives in my semi educated opinion.

Examples- Penfold's Private Bin series reds sell in supermarkets at a fraction of their cost here.

Danish Aalborg Akvavit, $45 here $18 there.

Heineken longnecks around $2.20-$2.40 anywhere in the USA.

Danish Carlsberg six packs (not the badge engineered VB crap sold here) $8-$9.

1.75 litre (three pint) bottles of cheap brand spirits $25-$30.
