Make sure you pull up the front carpets to check for rust. Also around the rear opera windows.
Check for regular servicing, particularly the timing belt.

I havent yet looked at it (I plan too!), i rang the seller of a 94 disco 300tdi had just a brief chat as he was driving he told me theres an oil leak and rust in the drivers seat footwell. With papers for all work done however its not the original motor and there are some mods like 2" lift I'm scared of buying a modified vehicle but not sure if i should be. At three grand, I know i can fix the floor and presumably the oil leak myself but it has no RWC I'll check for more rust when I see it.

I would def recommend an RAC/landy mech check any vehicle you like and are thinking of buiyng.

tips before
see if it has the preferred white/opaque overflow bottle, brass plugs in the top of the radiator and thermostat housing.
tips after purchase
if none of the above fitted.....fit them
a must is an engine monitor like a watchdog EM2 this will give you early warning if it drops heaps of water expectantly
check milage of timing belt 80k for a change, if unknown ...CHANGE IT
head gasket around the 250k mark

and yes i get under 10l/100km around town and under 9l/100km on the highway
