10 and 25 pound Poms, those were the days, it took me over 2 years and nearly $4000 to get my visa in 2010, not to forget the 2 medicals, aids tests and everything else they were checking for to make sure I was not a burden on society!! Then the cost of getting citizenship, which I may not have done so quickly but got sick of standing in the others queue at immigration.
Was it worth it?? Every Cent and Pennie!!
What a great thread! Yup, me too.. Well nearly... Born in Cork Ireland, moved to Herefordshire UK when I was 8.. Mother being English always wanted to go home! God knows why, but that said I had some awesome yrs as a farmers son in North Hereford. Why Oz????? Mmmm, about that. Well, someone saw Croc Dundee when he was a kid and fell in love with it! Came out here in 97 and bounced about on a few farms in Merriden WA. Fell in love with it as predicted! Came back out here in 99 for a girl that I'd met whilst driving an overland truck in Africa!!! (Thats another story!) She was from Adelaide. She was also boring as bat s**t and that ended. My newfound love for Australia however did not! Back to the UK for me, and back together with 'an old girlfriend' who incidentally is now my wife!! Migrated out here in Jan 08 using my skills as a Welder Boilermaker and Agricultural Mechanic. Best thing we ever did!! Would I go back? No chance! Have I been back? Nope! We got married here at our Barossa home late last yr. 126 guests, 120 of them are my Australian friends!! My dad now finally understands why I migrated! Love it!! Poms, if you are here and struggling, buy a house and get into it, there is more social life here than you can imagine.. (volunteer fire fighting etc)! If you are not sure, go home, as that ultimately is where your heart must lie. You WILL know if you are going to make it!!! Wouldn't change it for the world. As for the vehicle... Having owned a Ser 2 V8, Ser 1 V8, 90 V8, 101 V8 then Diesel, Ser 2 Bitza powered by VW6 TD, Home built V8 special, I swore I'd never own another Land Rover.... Yet here we are with a 130 and an 'in build' Ser 2 for SWIMBO which led me here, AULRO!! :D
I'm orignally from Halesowen in the West Midlands but spent the last ten years before moving to Aus (in 2007) living in Leeds.
I got offered a job here so I thought I'd give it a go. I'd never been to Australia before so thought I'd rather give it a try and find out I didn't like it here than never try and never know.
In the end, I did like it here so I've not gone back. Took the pledge last year.

Love all the stories everyone, I'm first generation Aussie, Father is Irish, mother is Scottish, went over too find relo's in 87, visited my Family on the Island of Arran, West Coast of Scotland, absolutely beautiful up there, my Cousin Miller, Scott side of the family runs the television repair shop in Lamlash.
Couldn't find any of my Irish family, but had a great time while there:twobeers:

I never liked fish and chips, but I do miss a smoked sausage supper.. Another thing I miss is a deep fried mince pie, but I do now eat fish and chips in OZ only as there is no other option at the chippy, and I take my own HP, again not chippy sauce but it does the job..Quote:

If it doesn't have a throttle cable and a filler cap, it a'int sport!!

My mob (three brothers and a sister) moved out here in 1850 from Devon, where the family farm was too small to support them, so I'm descended from poms. We visited the farm two years ago - its still owned by relatives - but I'm definitely an Aussie. Love this country.
When you boil it down, we're all migrants or descended from migrants.
I'm originally from Grimsby, Linconshire but moved over here with the family when I was 9 in 2004. Best move we ever made and don't regret it at all (the trips back just remind me of how great Australia is). I never really new what a Landy was when I was living there but now I love them and just bought my second :D
