    Trip to NZ

    Hi all,

Kerry and I would like to visit New Zealand in the Defender and camper trailer. Has any body here done so in a LandRover from Aust. I have read several overland sites and they say we will need a carnet and clearing customs can be a hassle. However do we need a carnet to travel as Australia has visa agreements with NZ. The carnet was mentioned by several people who traveled from the UK. Also, how much should I expect to pay for shipping and has anyone used a shipping company they could recommend?

    Cheers

    Nino

ask around the motor home brigade.quarantine can be difficult.

it was common for motor homes to be transported to brisbane from auckland return.i couldnt find a deal when i shipped my car.the frieght deal in NZ has now agian been reorgaised by the new government with it being reorganised into one department.

be a few thousand for the car and similar for the trailer each way.get a 40ft container deal may be easier.

i was quoted $75 cubic meter plus other costs-about double the shipping.

you also got a few hundred to cross the cook straight-in my opinion the south island is worth the effort.

The visa thing is for you as a person, I doubt they will apply to any vehicle. As such, you will either have to go down the Carnet route but as it's just the one country you're going to, you might as well put up a cash bond instead.

To get the car there, you could even go RoRo (Roll on, roll off). I'm not sure of the options from your area but there's certainly a RoRo service from Melbourne to Auckland. It may well call in at a couple of other ports en-route but that's the service I used... Took a few days.

The quarantine guys in NZ are cool but pragmatic. Make sure that you're there for the inspection as that does make a difference to their approach.

You will need a carnet, cash deposit via your automobile club on Ozzie, in some cases you can buy a insurance policy to cover the cash but usually it is organized from the Uk for long trips. I used a roll on roll off to bring my defender to Sydney, also be aware as in Ozzie some costs as they will want to clean you car etc on the wharf but are well used to it as we import many Japanese cars. Containers used to have a "charge" to cross the wharf etc
    Good luck
