Hi mate,
I'm glad to here that everyone is ok. you must be gutted! I think I would have wanted to keep punching the idiot. Without wishing to sound insensitive, who are you insured with as $27000 sounds to good to be true. I'm pushing the proverbial up hill to get $18000 agreed value for mine?
Cheers
Nino

Tell the Insurance company they are unique and the market value is in the $35K region, so you want it replaced, there were still two of them in a lot in Banksia Sydney. Only a 5 minute drive from Kingsford Smith airport. If you're interested I'll even pick you up at the domestic terminal and drive you down there. On second thought, if the other driver is at fault, tell his insurance company you want it replaced and don't run it through your insurance.

There is no responsibility for you to make a claim against your insurance company when the other party is at fault and insured. It is just easier for the insurance companies to deal with each other.
Firstly make sure you have reported the accident to the police and that they have determined fault, or the other party has admitted fault or there is no question of fault. If you make a claim directly on the other party's insurance company you can expect to be mucked around but you need to be determined, persistent and get your documentation in quickly.
You will need to get repair quotations from a number of repairers and also get dealer prices on the same model and year defender. Take copies and deliver the paperwork and letter of demand by hand to the other insurance company make sure you get a signature or have the paperwork delivered by registered mail or signed for courier delivery.
Remember if they are at fault, all the rights are on your side, you have no contract with the other company and they are paying for the damage and inconvience their member caused to you. They have to pay you for the full cost of repair and in fact do not have a right to the wreck of your defender. They will try to claim they do but they don't, don't let them remove your property from your possession. It matters not that you may be able to repair it cheaper than the cost of the quotes.
You can then negotiate.
