Do the earlier 4 speed manuals, which I now know to be the LT95, have any effect on the fuel efficiency? (engine rpm @ highway speeds)

Not sure about the gearing on the 4 speed, but I thought some info on the 5 speed LT77 may be useful. As noted previously, they aren't the strongest box in the world, but used sensibly - even towing and they go the distance without issue. Mine has been used for towing most of the 17 years it's been in the family, including the FIL 3 tonne boat, and other heavy duty work. It didn't do any off roading in that time - that has only happened recently, so not sure if it will live through what I have in mind for it going forward, but just thought I'd mention it - maybe you don't have to count it out if you plan to use the vehicle sensibly.

    Cheers - Gav

The LT 95 4 speed also has an overdrive that can be fitted, I have a friend that has a 110 county with LT95 +O/drive and he has also fitted Range Rover classic(RRC) transfer gearing, and it is about 2200 rpm @ 100kph from memory,he uses the O/Dr when travelling on freeways and long distance travel, his is a 3.5 V8 on gas,it has about 400,000 klms up now

My RRC has an LT77 in it and it's 2250 @ 100kph, I get about 5.5 klms per Ltr of gas

    cheers

I can trust my driving to give the gearbox a longer life, I just can't guarantee that anyone I the previous 25+ years of the vehicles life has done the same.

An overdrive sounds good. What is it off?

Seems like most Range Rovers are autos...?? That may have to be what I look for.

Generally, the LT77 has two modes - working or stuffed... - it usually happens quickly while being abused. If you find one that is going, it should be fine - but maybe someone else may be able to ellaborate - mine still works. Still, if you are worried, find an auto or 4 speed.

I'm back, and thanks for all the replies.

Our situation has changed a bit and the WRX has to go. I think a 94+ Auto V8 Disco is now the weapon of choice.

Now anyone wanna buy an MY99 WRX?
