Job woes. How to cope with redundancy at 37.

The title says it all. After loyally working (read that as busting my gut) for a company for 2 and a half years they decide to relocate and now my job has been made redundant. In a little over 2 weeks I'm unemployed. As a maintenance person (and we have gone to a place controlled by a body corporate hence no maintenance) with no quals I'm kind of stuck. And when a suitable job is advertised one day and closed the next due to overwhelming response it doesn't fill me with great confidence.

Having a hard time coming to terms with the concept. Finding I'm now becoming resentful at work, snappy and short tempered with people (and its getting worse as the days drag on) and it starts to effect home life too. I feel used and lied to and betrayed and like I'm the least valued employee. Worst part is after the move was announced we were told our jobs were safe. As far as I know I'm the only casualty. Sucks really. Have been told I'm not allowed to discuss with other staff unless it is a positive message I'm spreading. Not sure how that's possible really. I've been let down and betrayed but hey I'm still smiling. Give me a break.

    So what to do?????

Walk round with a knife sticking out of my back in a symbolic gesture since that's how i feel? Is it morally wrong to take 13 days of sick leave for the last 13 days of employment?

Go to your Doctor, judging from your post you are under stress...
Probably at least a week there, might send a message to your management too.

Bugger. Hope you find something else soon mate. I would be careful taking stress leave though as even though it may be deserved it might not look good for your next job if they find out.

    Whereabouts do you live?

Instead of hanging around at the ungrateful bastard of an employer, take extended lunch and tea breaks to go on interviews. Leave early, come in late. He can't really fire you without an extended disciplinary process by which time you'll be retrenched anyway.

    Just my 2c worth.

Mate, take it as an opportunity to get yourself some qualifications.
Get all the Government benefits you can and sign up for a course.
Or do a mature-aged apprenticeship, big companies (like power comapnies) can pay good money and there are very good government incentives for you.
Could be a blessing in disguise.

I agree with tomalophicon. I have been made redundant twice (once at 45 and again at 53). Fortunately I have tertiary qualifications but finding another job was still hard. I was unemplyed for over 3 months the first time and came over here the second
Yes you do feel as if it's something you have done wrong but that's not true. You need to try and look on the bright side (easy to say I know) and use this as an opportunity to change your life.

My late father always used to say, "If the boss gives you the sack, they are doing you a favour". Why? Because it makes you go and look for a better job. While you have a job you never go looking for a better one. I have been made redundant a few times and took voluntary redunancy last time and it was the best thing I did. You look back and think "I should have left years ago". Present job is a 24/7 job, yes I'm retired. Don't have time to go to work.

First of all, you made 37 before being retrenched! Well done.

Second, I'm with DeeJay on this one. Go and see a Doctor to get those health issues sorted.

Third, tomalophicon offered some great advice there. Pop down to your Centrelink office on your first day of unemployment and discuss your options there. You'll have to play their pointless game but be patient with them.

With your behaviour at work, suck it up princess. Be normal at work and celebrate your last day with your workmates. You never know, they may want you back one day.

I am where I am for the second (or is it third) time. I have been there almost a year on this stint. They may "be letting me go" soon if they don't get work soon. I think I might be able to get work where I was working prior to this job. Friends find it confusing as they can't keep up with the frequency I change jobs. "When I meet them in the street, the first question is usually "Where are you working now?'

This can be a positive thing.

One other thing to remember getting a new job is like betting on horses, you will eventually get a winner. The other thing to remember is that if they knock you back it's their loss not your failure.

First of all you will need to accept what has happened so that you can move on. It is highly unlikely that they did it to get at you, any energy you spend thinking that they did is only wasted.

Speak to your HR people, although you have been made redundant perhaps they can put you onto the Body Corporate maintenance people if you want to stay in that line of work. If not then as others have said, this maybe an opportunity to get into something that helps you get a qualification.

Keep your chin up, try and be positive and may you have the best of luck.
