    VINTAGE RACE CARS AT INDIANAPOLIS

The Indy 500 was held last weekend. Here are some of the vintage cars in support events and at the museum.

In several of the photos you can see a blue car, the KenPaul Special. This car was the winner in 1960. Thereby hangs a tale. The Indy officials recorded the crew chief as Chic Hirashima. Smoky Yunick reckoned he was but the officials refused to change the record thus making an enemy of Smoky for life. Last year was the 100th anniversary and the museum had an extensive display of as many of the winners as they could locate. I was there with Phil Reilly (Phil Reilly & Company, Vintage Car Repair). The KenPaul was prominently displayed on a podium. Later that week I visited Bob McConnell (Gaslight Auto Parts, Urbana, Ohio) who has enough restored Indy cars to run his own race, plus more awaiting restoration and enough parts to build more. I mentioned the museum display and the prominence given to the KenPaul car. Bob bristled up and said "That is not the KenPaul Special. I have the KenPaul Special". Unfortunately Bob has restored it as something else. A few weeks later in San Francisco I mentioned this to Phil Reilly. Phil laughed and said that there are now actually four KenPaul Specials but Bob McConnell possibly has the bragging rights as his contains more parts of the original car than any of the others.

If God intended racing cars to be rear engined, he would have made them that way first.

Black Jack Brabham and Ron Tauranac have the runs (and the World Championships) on the board, and, their cars did not disintegrate on the way to the finish.

Anyhow, real motor racing has dirt, lights, methanol, and Offenhausers.
