Cataract eye surgery

For most people it is no problem and a common operation. They usually do one eye at a time so you can still get around OK.

However - a word of warning - get the best surgeon and hospital you can.

My grandfather is now blind in one eye due to complications during his cataract surgery and recovery.

Robert, a mate of mine, in his late 70's, had both eyes done, the surgeon did one at a time, because he lives on his own, and looks after himelf. He said it was he best thing he ever did. The only down side for him was looking in the mirror and seeing how many wrinkles he actually had. Consult with your surgeon, you may need someone to drive you home. Can you just imagine, immediately after surgery and having to talk Land Rover all the way home. :o

2 Years ago I had both eyes done with the surgery, about 6 months apart.
The procedure takes about 15-20 minutes while you are stone cold sober...

I used to wear glasses before the op but not really needed now however if you read alot you will probably need them.

You have some simple eye scans a month or so before to measure you eye.

They gave me 3 lots of drops first to enlarge your eye, carefull the 3rd one stings like hell, they then gave me this what the doctor even thought huge needle just under the eye socket to numb things up, if you move you can get a black eye.

The scary part for me was what the described as a dentist drill breaking the old lense out and then they slip the new one in.

I had a eye patch on till the next day when the Doc checks you out, no driving for about a week.

I have a short range lense in one eye and a long range in the other apparently the norm these days.

The only side affects these days is I can still sometimes out of the corner of my eye see the scar that will never go away but I very really see it but I can on very cold mornings and windy days feel that something is in my eyes.

The only thing I would defintely say apart for get it done is invest in a decent set of sunglasses for afterward as wow everything is so bright.

That was very interesting.

Way to go yet as I have to go back to see Natali at EyeQ in a fortninght.
She gave me special drops for a dry eye condition.
She will make an appointment with the Specialist, so then I will sort out what's what when and if.

After being on the waiting list for twelve months, I am booked in to have my left eye done next Wednesday and the right eye a further twelve months later.

just dropped my old man off to have his second eye done 6 months after the first. He is having it done via the public system (no cost) and only had to wait an extra 9 months..... the exact same doctor is doing it as would have if he paid the $1,500. As has been said - eye patch few days, drops for a few weeks, protective glasses (so no dust in eye while healing). He is 92 and swears by the op. As they are a fixed focus lens he has great medium to distant vision and needs magnifying type glasses for up close only. No pain, no regrets - except wishes he got it done earlier. Good luck!!

my old man had it done 20 years ago and had to stay with me for a few days, but they didnt do much good for his sight he was nearly blind, several years later he had laser treatment and low and behold he could actually read a newspaper WITHOUT glasses although with a little difficulty

Had both eyes done about a year and a half ago. Surgeries were 2 weeks apart. I also had them put me in LALA land for them! On the way home from the first one, I was amazed to see individual leaves in the trees! I can now drive without glasses and wear COOL shades. I only need specks for reading and closeup work. I have worn glasses since I was 7 y/o and am so glad they are not mandatory now! Would do it again ( ? ) I understand the full price would have been about $5000 USD per eye. Thank god I had insurance. My cost was a little over $1400 USD.

I had both eyes done after wearing glasses for 40 years, I paid for the lens myself, the best money I have ever spent, As others, I have one for long range lens in one eye, and one lens for close up work, the operation did not hurt or feel anything, it is amazing what the surgeons can do these days
