    Attack on Newcastle

Today marks the 70th anniversary of the shelling of Newcastle by the Japanese Submarine I.21.

JAPANESE SUBMARINE ATTACK ON NEWCASTLE REMEMBERED : NBN News

Here is an animated reproduction of that attack, the guns at Fort Scratchley which protected Newcastle at that time are the only guns to fire on an enemy in anger from the Australian mainland!!

The first shot fired in anger by the allied forces was the gun at Port Phillip Bay which fired on a German merchant ship to stop it leaving port, within hours or war being declared, exact same thing happened in the WW1. A fishing trawler was attacked off Moruya Heads (South Coast NSW) and badly damaged by a Jap sub and 3 men killed, Regards Frank.

Yeah mate, they dropped more bombs on Darwin than they did at Pearl Harbour . I think there was something like 160 raids on Darwin. They also raided down the north coast of Queensland!!!

You are quite correct, I will rephrase to say the guns at Fort Scratchley were the only guns on Mainland Australia to engage an enemy vessel in a naval engagement!!

Australia under attack | Australian War Memorial

    Australia Attacked

On 31 May 1942, the war came to the east coast when three Japanese midget submarines entered Sydney Harbour.

In June 1942 a submarine lightly shelled the eastern suburbs in Sydney and then Newcastle.

Japanese submarines also attacked coastal shipping, causing the loss of some 60 lives and 29,000 tons of shipping during the two months after the midget submarine attack on Sydney Harbour.
