A mate bumped into him last week in Lakefield NP........he was driving a D3, and looking for his mate who was driving a Defender 90, so at least he's still connected with Landys.
Sounds like an Aussie exclamation, doesn't it?
Anyway, I finally got my finger out and copied my old, and now unavailable, Defence Public Relation VHS to DVD format.
57mins of pure '80's Army gold.
I will attempt to put it up on youtube tomorrow and I'll post links.
In the mean time, here's some screen captures.
Enjoy:

Didn't he kick around in a perentie 110 at one point?
What I would give for one of those....![]()
Would love to see that footage.
Yes he did, but that Toyota footage would predate Perenties. The regular army GS 4x4's at that time were Series3 6cylinder Landrovers, But the so called NorForce used LandCruisers. I think maintenance and spares from commercial dealerships in the northern parts of OZ was one of the reasons given. Past owner/operators of S3 6cyl LandRovers will have their own theories.
Bill.
What is NorForce for the record?
Seen it mentioned a few times...
Apart fom the Leyland boys, Les is the reason I love LR's so much. I've watched a few of his shows, then just went into la la land dreaming about doing the same thing in my own vehicle.
Can't wait to see the footage, I guess I should hunt down the series he did and watch it again.
Norforce is the Army Reserve surveillence unit, based in Darwin. They are responsible for surveillence of the vast area that is the NT., using vehicles, and in the past, pack horses.[don't know if they still do] They have a large contingent of local Aboriginal soldiers, who, by interacting with the local tribal groups, [ speaking the language], can usually get a good picture of whats going on in their area of operations. A regular Army cadre staff keeps the unit well trained & up to speed. Some very unkind regular soldiers used to call them "jaw force". [In jest, of course] Bob [ this was back in the 80's, things may have changed]
I’m pretty sure the dinosaurs died out when they stopped gathering food and started having meetings to discuss gathering food
A bookshop is one of the only pieces of evidence we have that people are still thinking
When I was in Kununurra in the 90's during one of the annual "Kangaroo" army exercises, the RAEME guys pulled in to town in Land Cruisers. I thought being the mechanics, they might have preferred the Toyotas, but they complained that they got the bad vehicles, while the operational guys got the Land Rovers.
Maybe in the 80's Bush Tucker wasn't as high profile as it became in the 90's, hence poor Les being confined to a Toymotor.
I have conferred with my brother, who spent 30 years in the army from 1969, he recounted that there was a move in the '70s to go from Land Rover to Landcruiser as those that drove the small number of Toyotas they had preferred them and had a lower rate of maintenance and failures. This was rejected as the steel body was judged more rust prone than the Land Rover body. When the army rejected the Toyotas, the Navy then purchased them to replace their Land Rovers, which sort of put a hole in the rust case. No abuse please, just what my brother, who was just a grunt at the time, told me.
p.s. He has owned nothing but Landcruisers for the last 30 years.
