Entirely fair, no wait, the rovers still being seasoned at that age so discounting routine service items lets compare it to SWMBOs disco which is 10 years old.... nope, 94 not 04 so what 18 years old.... none of those problems.
how about my ratty old disco 92... so 20 years old none of those problems.

Id say an old rover compares vary favorably to a new vehicle, cheaper too.

I have once, due to my stupidity. Although I can remember driving 250km's home with no electrics, after the alternator gave in and drained both batteries. I couldn't do that in my new car.

In my 18? years of driving, I've managed to own a fair range of cars, basically one each of a Chrysler, Holden, Mitsubishi, Mazda, Fiat, Ford, Opel, Nissan, Toyota and now the Disco, and they all need a bit of TLC, and have all left me with great memories (driving the Fiat Uno - 1L engine - through the Swiss mountains and on the German autobahns would have to be tops though, speed topping out at 85k/hr while being overtaken at 200k/hr!).

Scariest moment would be the Opel PCV hose splitting and spitting oil on the exhaust pipe, causing it to catch fire. Apparently a common occurrence!

The most reliable of the lot, I hate to say, would have to be the stock standard '98 Ford Falcon that we had for a couple of years in 2005/2006. Nothing needed doing ever except for oil and filters. The most boring car I ever owned :) Almost got a Territory because of that one.

I Miss my Disco a lot I really do. But shelling out $200-600 a jit was killing me. And as for trolling it was never my attention and Tombie People in glass house, shouldn't throw stones. If prizes for trolling were getting handed out mate you would win every time.

Can only agree. The ONLY thing that keeps LR's going is the loyal owners. All LR products are inconsistantly designed, and use too many cheap (unreliable) 3rd party suppliers.

Their procucts are a rip-off (generally) but their Marketing has been without peer. :eek:

Have got a RRC, same problem, too many 'silly' things break or malfunciton. - The sort of everyday stuff that always works on Jap vehicles!

A LR fanatic friend of mine traded his D2 diesel on a Pajero. - Loves the interior space, power, towing... Wife loves the reliability...

Seriously, I only bought the Rangie 'cos at that price-oint, Pajeros were way more expensive. - Reckon that says something.

Check this link, the 3.2 diesel is the one my friend bought, fairly recent, around 2007.

fair enough josh i do think people did get abit up tight about what you said.there is no perfect brand or vehicle otherwise we would all be driving the same thing-how boring that would be. i like land rovers because i think they have character and i find them different and interesting but in saying that i am really only into the old ones and the defenders. all the best Tony

Just FYI - Did a Cannonball to Adelaide yesterday...

Passed several LR products all decked out and either towing vans / campers or loaded with swags etc.

All going under their own power...

The 2 vehicles (1 included camper) on Flat beds were both... Land Cruisers...(And yes I have photographic proof)

So based on the idiotic logic (sic) displayed in this thread - they must be crap.... :twisted::p:cool:

Holden VS Commodores were a honest reliable form of transport too...

The example driven by my 18 yr old Son would suggest anything but this...

An honest appraisal of them (VS) would be what? Based on what perspective?

As another example:

My Father, who knows nothing about vehicles, left the Mazda/Nissan/Ford/Mitsubishi ranges and switched to LR with a D2 in 2000...

That vehicle never let him down - ever - And is now mine.

His new D3 has NEVER let him down, never had a glitch...

My D4 has NEVER let me down
The D2 was only stopped by a violent Animal strike at high speed...
My Defender never left me stranded
My D1 only left me stuck when I failed to service a wheel bearing in time.

A friends Defender. P38. D1 all were reliable... His Patrol was not, cost him thousands in repairs and upgrades...

A friend with an 80 series drops the bottom end each year and replaces Big End bearings and considers it a 'service item' :eek:

A friend with a long history of Mitsi vehicles loves them, but every one has had engine problems (smoking) and rattles... But loves them... Will always have them....

Put in context to your post... An honest appraisal is relative to the expectations of people, their vehicle and its use... Its also relative to how they are "viewing the world".

A good mate is on an around Oz trip...
So far his Cruiser has broken all shocks (all were new before trip), bullbar mount, engine mount, brakes, electrical issues sorted in Broome and much more...

He's only done 7500km.... But he loves the vehicle and considers it "Normal".....

And keeping this balanced - I looked at the Pajero - Its a nice vehicle, drives well, but I didn't like the styling. Value for $$$ the spec that matches my D4 was around the same price..... But the servicing would have cost me a lot more.

I was keen on an Amarok - but it wouldn't meet my towing spec.

Is Land Rover overpriced? Well the PM shows an opinion of perceived value - someone doesnt see the value in what was offered.


Your PM buddy has a RRC - A freakin old vehicle by todays timeline...
Of course **** is going to niggle and break...

All the (mainly young) fellas here spend their time and money keeping their earlier model HiLux, Patrol, Cruiser, Jeep, Navara, Pathfinders tweaked.... They all have continual niggling problems.... Its the vehicle AGE...

That, and the fact they are using them to play offroad quite often, which then requires ongoing repair and maintenance.

Since I've owned my D2, which isn't long I admit, maybe 8 months, I've not seen a single LR on a tray back or being towed :p
In the last week I've seen 3 busted Tojo's, a Pajero and a Pootrol being towed :)

Anyway - I can tell by the writing who wrote that PM quoted above. He has quite a lot of RRC experience by the sounds of it, but yes, it also sounds like an older vehicle that needed a fair bit of work.

It's not when any car gets old that's the problem here, as they all get dodgey then . . . it's in their first few years of life.
