Great! I just loved working on stuff of that size as it was something you could really get your hands on/in & not your fiddly diddly domestic comps. ie. they had balls. [bighmmm]
The crowd I worked for used a few 3 cylinder belt driven Admiralty Pattern comps for fruit stores. I can't recall the name of them now, Hall, Howden or some such name, silver jobs they were & apparently meant for ship refrigeration although the stores where they were installed were a long way from the sea.
I always felt there was something reassuring about a well designed & installed Semi- hermetic purring along & doing it's job.
Mind you, we have all come across really crap ones too. Unbalanced, noisy, vibrating ****e that fractures piping on a regular basis.
No names no pack drill.

Done a heap of work on those Tranes,no where near as robust as a 5H or 5F Carrier.
They hate the slightest bit of liquid,and moisture destroys the shaft seal pretty quickly.
We used to service 22 of them at the Logan Hyperdome,but they have now gone to the same place as the dinosaurs.Replaced with chillers.
Interesting.
That's the first time I've worked on that old girl.
The part winding start contactor went up on flames one day!
I walked in to clean some elements in the main duct and "sniff sniff!" :o
I went back to address the oil leak from that head.
re the shaft seal, the one in a very easterly point store went through lots of shaft seals apparently!
The last one was replaced only a few months ago by a Sydney based company by replacing the entire compressor, which we couldn't get our heads around as the store is now being mothballed and gutted!
Anyway, I walked in doing some work on a rack and found the comp off and about 10 litres of POE oil across the floor only two weeks after replacement!
Quite a bit of 407c had gone ta ta!
Two of the chillers I look after run 06E's on 22 still!
One's around 500kw and the other is 700+
We're starting the process of quoting replacements, corrosion has really taken it's toll, and these old girls are about 25km from the ocean!
They are only 14 years old, French built Carriers.

I found this yesterday,fixed it today.
Its a Junction box off a condensing unit,i think the run cap probably caused it to burn.
At the top of the side on pic,you can see the wires that came in.
They said the fire alarm did go off on Sunday night,they came in but couldn't find anything.
Didn't open the freezer until Yesterday,and everything was soft.[bighmmm]
Oh,and the freezer breaker won't reset[biggrin]

The R22 out of those would be nice.
O6E were not bad,but no where near as good as the smaller 6D range of carrier semi's.Bullet proof like 5H and F.
The later carrier air cooled chillers,say 5 to 10yr old have continual issues with pin holes in condenser coils,even 100's of K's from the coast.[bigsad]
I've had one tube let go on the bigger of the two and could repair it pretty easily.
It's the framework that has severely died on these, they are a mess.
The POS Clint chiller at a Supermarket near the border and just in from the beach is the second one there in under two years.
I'm waiting for the condensers in it to go soon.
The corrosion is horrific.

Rick, wasn't/isn't there a spray on product that is supposed to protect against corrosion on condenser fins or did I imagine that in one of my annual wet dreams? I'm sure I read about it in some journal.
Either that, or it may have been a Factory OEM Treatment, Like a varnish but supposed to have had good heat transfer properties.
6D79s you mentioned elsewhere, I loved those as well,..... balanced, quiet, & gave excellent reliable service.

I would hate to work on the coast,working on corroded gear all the time.
Geez,you would have to be very careful quoting repairs.
I can just imagine the customer,its only 2 yrs old bla bla.
BLY GOLD is the corrosion coating.Never used them,but have to get some tubing for a large condensate tray coated by them shortly.
There are others around but they are supposed to be the best.They actually strip complete AC units and coat them,then reassembly them.
Yes those 6D79,75,48,29,they were fantastic.MAny were in the Carrier 50K AC units,some running on R500.
Carrier even used them direct drive using a little diesel in their transport refrigeration range.
