One thing I forgot to say is the chiller runs on R32,and it wouldn't be my first choice of brand.
Never seen one on R32 before,Rick may have?

They are certainly compact compared to the old Centrif's,or racks of recip's or tin cans.

Some of those Centrifs were certainly huge bastards.

Did I ever tell you about the Trane at The once Grosvenor Hotel in Adelaide CBD? No? Ok then. Stood about 7' high.
    .

Startup day arrives & all & sundry were gathered in the dedicated plantroom

Owner, Chairman of the Board, Builder, you know the drill?

Main Isolator on, Check. Pumps optng & flow proved. Check.

    Fans proved, check.

etc etc, so the Trane Engineer guy gives the nod to the Tech to "hit it".

Plant room had about 20 blokes in it, ie. the above & general Other trades & stickybeaks.

2 seconds later there was only one, me.

The sparky who wired the set had inadvertently put a heavy gauge PK screw through the one of the heavy cables to the comp to hold a large cable clamp in a Panel.

Jeezuz, people can move fast when their lives appear to be in danger. Bangs, Arcs, Electrical Smoke, ****, some debris blowing about, the bloody comp banging back & forth on it's spring mounts until some one killed it.

I happened to be last out & someone asked why, "Did you have to switch summat off?" or something "No, 'cos I got trampled in the rush to the doorway"

A little while late after minor repairs we had a successful Start without the theatricals.

A day to remember but I'm sure we have all had them & can look back & laugh.

Yes been to a few of those,Moreton Bay Nursing care unit comes to mind,as does Jupiters Casino.

MBNCU,refrig plant room, all the suited up guys were there, looking over the new refrigerant plant. One decided he wanted to look closely at something in the main mechanical switchboard,so wanted the board turned off.
I shut everything down, then turned off the board.
The diesel generator in the corner of the plant room started, bloody horrendously noisey thing.
Anyway, they all did a few laps around the plant room, and ran into each other heading straight out the door
A couple of them had turned very white,it scared the **** out of them.
    Oh,and me as well.

Jupiters, time to start the first Centrif, these things drew almost 1000Amps a phase.
All sorts of lightning and sparks from the liquid starters, turns out the liquid is the wrong concentration

Been quite a few others, as in another life I spent many years doing only commissioning, i really mean fixing up consultants and engineers stuff ups and electricians and mech plumbers mistakes and stuff ups as well.

Its amazing how these well paid consultants and engineers have NFI what they are doing, and sparkies, when you get house wirers doing mechanical services, well, its all going to go pear shaped...
    Oh well, kept us busy.

Paul you'll need to enlighten me on Liquid Starters, never used those or even heard of them in my small domain.

    This might help?

Three Phase Induction Motor Starting Methods | Starting methods of three phase induction motor

Haven't seen any since that job.

Other jobs used auto Transformers from memory(which is getting a bit vague these days)
    With Star Delta start.
    Or part winding start.

Liquid resistance starters are pretty rare, particular now days. They are also usually used in conjunction with a wound rotor/ slip ring motor.

Auto transformer type are more common as they can be used with a squirrel cage induction motor, which are a lot cheaper than a wound rotor type.
Most types incur a big reduction in starting torque, so the selection of what type is best is often determined by the the type of load being driven.

Star Delta starters are also usually confined to smaller drives where the consideration is more on the installations capacity, rather than the requirements of the load. Supply authorities usually have the say on this. Part winding starting is similar.

Modern VFD drives have made a lot of the old methods obsolete.

A lot of the marine stuff that I worked on was DOL. Not uncommon to bang a 100hp DOL. (helped to keep the generator engine exhausts clean!)

No, although I look after a few on R410a, did an annual PM on one today so not surprised, though.

    Wow.
The last liquid resistance starer setup I saw i was 12!

Dad used it on a new W12 Daikin on a refurb they did at the overseas transmission station, OTC Doonside in 1977.
They'd replaced two Werner comps with one Daikin with a 100HP motor and used a liquid resistance starter bank to get it going.
It was pulling too much current with a Star/Delta setup.
That was the only time I've seen an oil bath filter setup in an AC system, too.
The computer floor it looked after was huge, but i was only 12! One for the fridgies

    That brings back memories.

We had a heap of those oil bath filters on jobs,i hated the bloody things.

Then we had gelled bag filters, messy bloody things as well.

The only oil bath filter I see these days is on the Series 1
