Thanks for all the useful tips.
Well to close this thread, I managed to totally bork the finish of the faux timber strip. Put a coat of clear varnish on it and it wrinkled up like a prune. Not impressed 
Anyway after a glass of red, a head scratch and a bit of lateral thinking, I've created a genuine wood solution, which looks really neat and not unlike the "Real" wood in my old Rangie.
I'll the story and pics up in a separate post in a bit. Look in the tutorials section
