I saw on the news tonight the Bounty was lost in the huge storm hitting the U.S.
One dead and the Captain has not been found!
Apart from the terrible loss of human life which I am sure we all feel bad about, the loss of this magnificent vessel is a huge tragedy.
It was made for the sixties movie "Mutiny on the Bounty" and had a steel hull planked over in timber.
I sailed on her years back and she was just such a beautiful lady of the sea. The captain told me then that she had been through a cyclone once and all they could do was haul in all sail, batten down the hatches, point her into the storm, lash down the wheel and go below to ride it out.
There was no helm below decks just a couple of diesels to power her through the storm.
It must have been such a terrifying experience for the survivers, being locked below decks and then having to fight their way out to try and live through it.
I wonder if such a vessel will ever be built again, Bond and a few others financed the building of the replica Endevour and the Duyfken but that was during the glory days of the 80's with bicentennial fever running high.
A very sad day for Australia I think.

SupporterThis Bounty is not the Aust/NZ Bounty that we often see in Sydney and was used in the 84 film The Bounty with Mel Gibson.
The one that sunk was built for the 60s film with Marlon Brando - different replica.

According to Reuters she claimed to be a descendant of Fletcher Christian, and that is the reason she had sought the position on the ship.
From my brother in Houston (who is a girl scout 'big boat' sailing instructor, and well connected with the US sailing fraternity) the water coming in overwhelmed the pumps. He said the ship had been slipped in Maine in September, and was only relaunched a week ago, but there are rumours that maintenance had been neglected in several periods during its life. It was heading for Galveston for the winter.
With a traditional wooden structure, it is possible that it was 'nail sick' allowing the component bits of wood to move in heavy seas, dislodging the caulking and allowing large amounts of water to enter, or simply, having been out of the water for some weeks, the decks may have dried out and leaked badly with waves breaking over the decks.

The one that sank was the earlier one and appears to have been traditional wooden construction. The later one is built differently.

As the news came through yesterday that the replica Bounty had sunk, concern was raised in Northland that it could be the one built by the old Whangarei Engineering Company (WECO) in Whangarei in 1979 and used in the 1984 Dino De Laurentiis film The Bounty.
However, the replica boat that sank was built in Nova Scotia in 1962 for the MGM film Mutiny on the Bounty, which starred Marlon Brando.

For many years, the Whangarei-built Bounty served the tourist market from Darling Harbour in Sydney, before being sold to HKR International Limited in 2007.
It is now a tourist attraction and also used for charter, excursions and sail training based in Discovery Bay, on Lantau Island, in Hong Kong.
The sunk Bounty was made of wood whereas the one built in Whangarei is constructed of welded steel oversheathed with timber.
