I've never had a problem with this.. the Sony takes ePub, PDF and text files, which is about the only file formats I have seen on the ereader book stores. I have heard from a friend who has one that the Kindle is a little fussier with which formats it likes and some do not display as well as they should (or at all).. but you can (I believe) get around this by sending the file to a kindle email address where it gets converted.. my reasoning to this is 'why bother with another step?'.. why not just have something that can read it all in the first place.

it also has Evernote build it (so you can keep track of any annotations and notes you might make) and evernote clipper so you can clip stuff online (yes it can connect to the internet with wifi - I never have though as I don't have the need for it).. same with the built in face book.. I believe with the newer ones you can also 'borrow' books from the library wirelessly (from home) straight to your reader too..

We both have Kindles, the basic model & are very happy, I often finish a book or two at odd hours and in out of the way places while holidaying. The Wifi works great never had a prob. The only extra things we got was the Leather covers. You can get a cover with a light if you want to spend a few more $.

Neither of us has picked up a book for a year now. Dealing with Amazon is fairly painless, all you need is a credit card, Choose a book its downloaded in a min or two. You the get an Email to your computer that describes your latest transaction.

Often find some of the more interesting books are on the free list or cost very little. Latest releases can be had for less than $20.00.

+1 for calibur. Can't think of the brand I bought my wife but the e book is great. Once you have one you will see it is the only way to go. I dodged the brand name so I could get books from where ever I wanted. Will have to find the sci fi company I got a load of books from. They offer quite a few free but they are often the first book in a series so if you like it you have to buy the rest.
Non back lit is better on your eyes.

Thanks one and all, we're off down to the street to see about a new aircon, so might pop into a few shops that sell these and see what you have suggested.
One of the only things that worries me a bit now is the info about "1 comp access". We have two comps, both are shot one way or another, so maybe they can tell us if we can use our phones to do this (?).

We'll see what happens :)

Hi again Chops, I might be a bit late with this info, but my partners Kindle reader does not rely on any computer access, it has its own 3g receiver
and the connection is completely free. Amazon have an arrangement with the major Australian carriers and can connect to whichever one gives the strongest signal. It can also be used as a free browser:D although the interface is fairly clumsy. We often carry it if we go out for the day just for looking up phone numbers, addresses and maps etc.
I think it cost her about $220.00 new

Well, I'd like to thank all for your input.
I ended up buying her the Kindle, and various accessories for car charging etc. in the end all up it was just on $300. This unit is considered the "top" of the range as it has it's own Internet access. It doesn't have a touch screen, which is something the Leeanne likes, as she struggles sometimes with her phones touch screen.
Of this, $50 was dealer rip-off "set-up fees,, total waste of time :mad: All the places I went to, all suggested "this would be of great assistance",, bull****,, just a way of getting their profits up from any discounts you may have been able to acquire.
My advice for anyone buying any of these units, unless you don't own, or can't get any access to any comp, save yourself the $50.

When it finally comes down to it, if you don't have the book in your library, you have no ownership , all the new gizmos are good, but just that , gizmos. Not as impressive as a well equiped library of ..... REAL.... Books Bob

office works have a couple of nice units and I'm running and old hanvon unit not as fancy as a kindle but I liken it to using an Ebay mp3 player over and Ipod, My music My way on My software of choice.

Kobo, thats the one thats at office works.... dead easy to use, put your Ebooks onto an Sd card and plug that in

I use calibre to do my conversions usally but I've got a couple of other standalones that I use that do drag and drop conversion.

I'm turning into a bit of a convert. Although I like my shiny gadgets, and my Ipad particularly, I bought my Daughter a Kindle for Chrissy, and She loves it - and strangely, so do I. I thought it would be a complete waste of time, and that if I wanted to read an ebook, I would use my ipad, BUT, I have to admit that the Kindle is SOOOOOO much better to read from as it is not backlit. The best thing about it is that you can read it outside - even in full sunlight easily. It is very light, and has great battery life. Thinking of getting one myself now...:D
