How far up Cape York can you get a big truck (4x4)?

Yes, they are all on the OTT (Old or Overland Telegraph Track) which follows the original telegraph lines. The peninsula development road is the one you can drive trucks on and is frankly a fairly boring, badly corrugated dirt road up the Jardine Ferry.

Have a look at a Hema Cape York map or such like and you will see.

I've been to Tailem Bend (once). Why would anyone want to commence a walk of protest from there? Or walk that highway back to the hills. :eek:

I have fond memories of being buzzed by B doubles doing 100 km/h + while I rode my peddly on the white line of the verge of the highway. I was clocked by a hiding copa pedalling 32km/h. Safe to say I wasn't booked.

Some have been going on ebay for as little as $1,500.
There have been many good ones (if you believe the vendor) for sale at under $6,000.

Very affordable and (if you believe those who use them) reliable.

you can take the offroad tracks all the way up...

a 1700 makes it easy... can get a touch tight but its workable.

I was given a ride in the back of one of the Army Unimogs from Bamaga to the carpark at the tip. How the Army got the trucks to Bamaga I don't know but I think they drove them up, I was lucky enough to come in on a Caribou and out on a DC-3.

I dont remember any resort from our trip in the 90,s let alone an abandoned one.
There was a 4x4 Acco going up at the same time as us.

No, Punsand bay is still going strong, although I wasn't as impressed by some by their legendary set menus.
There is another resort within walking distance of the tip, that opened and closed very quickly. RH side of the road N about 100? metres before the car park.

BTW the Aussie Adventures 4X4 Mitsubishi buses get right to the car park and onto the "beach" so a Unimog will have no trouble at all with clearance.
