    V8 Cat engine "broken"

    Gday All,

Our company's fish trawler which has been under tow with a suspected broken valve on its V8 cat engine arrived in town late today and the fleet engineer pulled 1 of the rocker covers off and found this
    Uploaded with ImageShack.us

This is 1 of the exhuast rocker arms, wonder where the missing bit is, think both turbo's may need some close inspection
Cant wait to see the rest when they strip it down tomorrow.

    Cheers Ean

nahh, too much dynotarding will do that to an engine. the bits wont have made it to the turbo, they'll be floating around one of the rod holes or tower bolts somewhere unless they managed to get pulverised enough to get down to the sump.

    Sounds expensive

    Would it be a 3208?

When i was doing a lot of marine refrigeration, many of the guys used to run the 3208.They had very little trouble with them,as long as they were maintained properly.

sure, how else do you keep the boat on the face of a swell and stop it from running away nose first into the bottom, its not like you can just dial on a little more trailer brake.

I haven't seen a shaft brake fitted to a boat since urrmmmm I think it was on a model of a gearbox-less reversible diesel.

(I was more or less inferring that I've seen snapped rocker arms before and that normally the breakage was associated with dyno usage)

Dave, it's a Cat motor in a boat. Dynatard is an engine brake for a Mack truck.
If you don't like trucks, stop buying stuff.

Whats a Cat doing on a boat, I thought that a cat on board was bad luck.

Isnt a Dynotard a mentally challenged tyrannosaur?

Using the Jacobs to hurry upshifts isn't good for Cummins either.
